6. Amaranthus anardana Hamilton ex Moquin-Tandon (1849: 256) View in CoL

Type (lectotype, here designated):— INDIA. Bhagalpur, 02 November 1813, Wallich 6903 (K barcode K000196859 [digital image!], image of the lectotype is available at http://apps.kew.org/herbcat/getImage.do?imageBarcode=K000196859, individual of the left).

= Amaranthus hypochondriacus Linnaeus (1753: 991) View in CoL . Type (lectotype designated by Townsend 1985: 25):— U.S. A.. Habitat in Virginia, Herb. Linn. No. 1117.24 (LINN [digital image!], image of the lectotype is available at http://linnean-online.org/11650/).

Nomenclatural notes: — The protologue of Am. anardana View in CoL constists of a diagnosis, a description and the indication (after the name) “ (Hamilt. ln Wall.! list n. 6903) ”, which refers to the Wallich’s catalogue (1829: 231). The latter author listed Am. anardana View in CoL without description (nomen nudum according to the Art. 38.1 Ex. 1 of the ICN), but he cited three localities (“ Baghulpur…Beloya… Nepal 1821 ”). Moquin-Tandon (1849: 256) reported, after the diagnosis, “ In Nepaliâ View in CoL et ad Baghulpur (Wall.!) ” so apparently removing the locality Beloya (see also Sauer 1967: 111). Sauer (l.c.) stated “ Type: Bhagulpur, Beloya, and Nepal, 1821, Wallich 6903, Maquin-Tandon herbarium, P ”. There is one specimen preserved at P (barcode P00606388, image available at http://dsiphoto.mnhn.fr/sonnerat/LAPI/scanL/L20080229/ P00606388.jpg), bearing four pieces (three parts of the synflorescence and one leaf) of a probably the same plant, and the labels “ amar. anardana Hamilton View in CoL in Wall. Herb. Desf. [Desfontaines]”, and “ amaranthus anardana Hamilt. Prodr. View in CoL 13, 2, p. 256 India cl. Wallich n° 6903 ”. Although there is the Wallich’s number “6903”, the locality of collection is generic, the collection date is lacking, and the specimen appears to be part of the Desfontaines’ collection, which is not cited neither by Wallich (l.c.), nor by Moquin-Tandon (l.c.). As a consequence, I cannot be sure that this specimen is part of the original material for the name Amaranthus anardana View in CoL (Art. 9.3), and I prefer to avoid it as possile lectotype. On the other hand, a sheet preserved at K (barcode K000196859) could be useful for the typification purposes. The latter exsiccatum bears two pieces (terminal parts) of certainly different plants. In fact, there are two labels, each associated to one of these plants: the label on the left reports “ Amaranthus anardana Bhagalpur View in CoL 2 Nov 1813 ”, while that on the right reports “ Amaranthus anardana Beloya View in CoL 7 Nov 1813 ”. Although the annotations on exsiccatum at K (locality of collection, collector and the collection number) completely match the data reported in the protologue, according to McNeill (2014) I cannot be sure that this specimen is the only one in extant. As a consquence I here designated that the specimen K000196859 as the lectotype of the name Amaranthus anardana View in CoL .

Taxonomical notes:— Sauer (1967: 111) synonymized Am. anardana with Am. hypochndriacus , probably on the basis of the examination of the specimen at P (see the above discussion), where a third label (pinned on the bottom-right) includes the Sauer’s annotation (a re-determination) “ Amaranthus hypochondriacus L. (= A. leucocarpus S. Wats ) det. J. Sauer 1960 ”. The lectotype (at K) matches the current concept of Am. hypochondriacus (see e.g., Bojian & al. 2003, Mosyakin & Robertson 2003, Iamonico 2015) so I agree with Sauer (l.c.) and confirm the synonymization.

7. Amaranthus blitum var. angustifolium Moquin-Tandon (1849: 263) Am. roxburghianus var. angustifolius (Moq.) Nair (1976: 61)

Type (lectotype here designated):— SPAIN. Iberia, 1845, Steven s.n. (P 04021955 [digital image!], image of the lectotype is available at http://mediaphoto.mnhn.fr/media/1449590578658LUSLSRQqhxK3hEZR).

= Amaranthus graecizans subsp. graecizans Linnaeus (1753: 990) View in CoL .

Type (lectotype designated by Fernald 1945: 139):— U.S.A. Habitat in Virginia, Herb. Clayton 442 (BM000051563 [digital image!], image of the lectotype is available at http://data.nhm.ac.uk/dataset/collection-specimens/resource/05ff2255-c38a-40c9-b657- 4ccb55ab2feb/record/2350167).

Nomenclatural notes:—A short diagnosis (“foliis angustioribus sublinearibus”), a locality and collection [“In Iberiâ Caucasicâ (Stev.! h. DC.)]”, and a doubtful synonym (“ Amaranthus tenuifolius Roxb. Fl. Ind. 3, p. 602?”) were given by Moquin-Tandon (1849: 263) for the new Amaranthus blitum var. angustifolium . The Steven’s specimen is preserved at P (barcode 04021955). This specimen bears one plant, which features match the diagnosis, and the original label “ amaranthus angustifolius | Iberia | cl. Steven 1825 ”. I here designated the P 04021955 as the lectotype of the name Amaranthus blitum var. angustifolium .

Taxonomical notes:—On the basis of the floral characters and leaves shape the Moquin-Tandon’s var. angustifolius is to be referred to the European Am. graecizans s.str. (see e.g., Carretero 1990, Iamonico 2015).
