39. Euxolus lividus var. oblongifolius Moquin-Tandon (1849: 273) View in CoL
Type (neotype here designated):—UNKNOWN ORIGIN. s.d., s. coll . [Herb. Merat] s.n. (P 04021954 [digital image!], image of the neotype is available at http://mediaphoto.mnhn.fr/media/14495905755732EL1j0eg3u0Bp8nr). = Amaranthus blitum Linnaeus (1753: 990) var. blitum . Type (lectotype designated by Filias et al. 1980: 149–150):—EUROPE. Habitat in Europa temparatiore, Herb. Linn. No. 1117.14 (LINN
[digital image!], image of the lectotype is available at http://linnean-online.org/11640/).
Nomenclatural notes:—A very short diagnosis (“foliis oblongis”) was given by Moquin-Tandon (1849: 273) for the var. oblongifolius . The author also reported “v. s. [= Vidi Sicco] in h. Merat” after the diagnosis. I found one specimen at P (barcode 04021954), which is part of the Merat’s collection (original label: “ amaranthus ... | nova species | an a. circinnatus... | herb. Merat ”). Lacking the date of collection, I prefer to use and designate this exsiccatum as the neotype of the name Euxolus lividus var. oblongifolius (Arts. 9.2, 9.3, and 9.7 of the ICN; no other specimens were traced).
Taxonomical notes:—The leaves shape of the var. oblongifolium is unusual for the plants currently recognized as Am. blitum Linnaeus (1753: 990) [≡ Am. lividus Linnaeus (1753: 990) ≡ Euxolus lividus (L.) Moquin-Tandon (1849: 273)]. However, the neotype designated in the present paper shows bracts and tepals, which characteristics completely match with the current concept of Am. blitum var. blitum (see e.g., Mosyakin & Robertson 2003, Iamonico 2015). Since the high taxonomic value of the pistillate floral characters in Amaranthus , I here propose to treat Euxolus lividus var. oblongifolius as heterotypic synonym of Am. blitum s.str.
