( Figs 25–28 View FIGURES 21–28 , 31–32 View FIGURES 29–32 , 82–84 View FIGURES 69–84 )

Platychira tuberculata Zimin, 1957: 536 View in CoL . Holotype male (IZRAS, not examined). Type locality: Primorsky, Russia.

Eurithia tuberculata: Mesnil (1972a: 1062 View in CoL , as synonym of Eurithia emdeni View in CoL , misidentification, Palearctic tachinids); Herting (1984: 105, as synonym of Eurithia emdeni View in CoL ,?misidentification, Palearctic catalog); ( Richter 2004: 298, as synonym of emdeni View in CoL ,?misidentification, Far East Russian tachinids).

Diagnosis. Medium to small-sized species, resembling P. emdeni but differing as follows: inner vertical seta developed in male; abdomen rather rounded; scutellum with fine and crossed apical setae; 4 postsutural dorsocentral setae; thoracic pleura with normal dense hairs, especially normal hairs on the postpronotal region and posterior part of the anepisternum; male cerci short, rather weakly narrowed from base to apical 1/ 3 in dorsal view.

Redescription. Body length: 7.2–9.9 mm.

Male. Vertex slightly wider, 0.09–0.11 of head width (0.25–0.29 of single eye width); inner vertical seta well developed, almost 2 times as long as postocellar setae; ocellar setae developed, only slightly shorter than inner vertical seta; parafacial slightly narrower than 1.5 times width of postpedicel; antenna with postpedicel about 2 times as long as wide and about 1.5 times as long as pedicel; thorax with shorter and sparser hairs, postpronotal lobe and anepisternum with rather normal hairs, long anepisternal hairs distinctly shorter than anepisternal setae in row; relative lengths of 2nd, 3rd and 4th costal sectors approximately as 3:5.5:2; bend of vein M sometimes with a short appendage, length of vein M from dm-cu crossvein to bend 1.2–1.3 times distance between bend and wing margin. Terminalia: 6th tergite with a row of fine short hairs marginally; cerci in dorsal view narrowed from base to basal 1/3 and nearly parallel-sided to posterior 1/3, then strongly narrowed to apex, in lateral view nearly straight, base of cerci about 5/7 as wide their length; surstylus slightly bent ventrally, with weakly narrowed to blunt apex and 3 short spines at apex.

Female. Vertex 0.28–0.30 of head width; parafacial about 1.5 times as wide as width of postpedicel; postpronotal lobe and anepisternum with normal hairs, not distinctly dense and long. Terminalia: 6th tergite entire, mid-dorsal anterodorsal margin narrowly excavated semicircularly, with many strong setae on posterior margin; 6th sternite about 2/3 as long as 5th sternite, close to the latter; 7th tergite separated mid-dorsally into quadrate hemitergites, longer than 6th tergite, with a row of marginal setae; 7th sternite about 4/5 as long as 6th, with a row of rather strong setae on median portion and on posterior margin, respectively, mid-dorsal anterior and posterior margins weakly excavated; 8th tergite reduced to a very small sclerite on both sides; 8th sternite formed of small rectangular sclerite, about 3 times as wide as long, with several fine hairs; epiproct reduced to a pair of small sclerites, each with a long hair.

Material examined from Japan (all in KUM unless otherwise mentioned). Hokkaido: 1 male, Shiretoko Pass , 8.vii.1986, H. Shima ; 1 female, Ashoro, Berabonai , 5.vii.1986, M. Abe. Honshu : 1 male, Aomori Pref., Nishimeya, Kawaratai , 28.v–4.vi.2010, Malaise trap, T . Nakamura ( BLKU) ; 25 males, 2 females, Nagano Pref., Sigakogen, Kawaragoya , 30.v.1975, A. Nakanishi & J. Emoto (Malaise trap) ; 1 male, 3 females, Nagano, Shimashima , 22.v.1975, A. Nakanishi & J. Emoto ( BLKU) .

Distribution. Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu); Russia (Far East).

Remarks. This species was described and illustrated in detail by Zimin (1957: 536, figs 5–2, 8–6). It was confused with P. emdeni by Mesnil (1972a) and probably by others.

As O’Hara et al. (2009) pointed out, Eurythia tuberculata Chao & Shi, 1981 is a junior secondary homonym of Platychira tuberculata Zimin, 1957 . It was not renamed at the time because P. tuberculata was thought to be a synonym of Eurithia emdeni Mesnil. With Panzeria tuberculata recognized here as valid, its junior homonym must be renamed and is given the replacement name Panzeria chaoi nom. nov. (with the specific epithet taken from the name of the senior author). It is possible that Panzeria chaoi is a distinct species known from Sichuan and Xizang, China, and it appears to be close to P. emdeni or P. tuberculata according to the original description and illustrations by Chao & Shi (1981: 80, figs 18–21, 81), although the male frons appears much wider and the male surstylus is very different in shape ( Chao & Shi 1981: 80, fig. 21).
