Distribution. Palaearctic.
Material examined. 250 specimens ( KUMN, SZIK, ZIN, ZMUN, SIZK) including: Zhytomyr Prov. : 1 spec. ( SIZK) Zhytomyr, G. Proschiga leg., 30.v.1922 ; 5 spec. ( SIZK) idem, 14.v.1925 ; 1 spec. ( SIZK) Korostyshiv env., V. K. Odnosum leg., 7.vi.1977 .
Biology. Forests, floodplains, ruderal habitats. Adults occur in IV–VII. Feeds mostly on Urtica dioica (Urticaceae) , but recorded from many other plants.
Note. This polymorphous species is represented by two subspecies occasionally considered as separate species: Ph. pomaceus pomaceus occurring in Europe, and Ph. pomaceus fessus Boh. occurring in Siberia. Ph. fessus has recently been recorded from Poland, that obviously based on misidentified specimens of Ph. jacobsoni .
