Type species, Musca gibbosa Linnaeus, 1758 ; by subsequent monotypy by Latreille, 1802 (species cited as Syrphus ).

Holotype: male, without date (cited as deposited in C. Stuardo Collection, actually at MNNC but it is not deposited in this last institution and it is not at USNM, presumably lost). Paratype: male, Panguipulli. Dist. : Los Ríos (Valdivia: Panguipulli).

jacobaeus ( Philippi, 1871)

Thersites jacobaeus Philippi, 1871: 292 . Syntypes: female, male, Santiago province (NMW but actually lost; according to Hennig (1968: 3), the type specimen is not deposited in this institution). Dist: Metropolitana (Santiago: without precise locality).

Comments: Hennig (1968) indicates erroneously that this species was described by a single female, but Philippi (1871: 293) give measurements for a female specimen and indicate that “Das Männchen ist halb so gross wie das Weibchen, sonst nicht wesentlich verschieden” (= The male is half the size of the female, otherwise not essentially different). Clearly, Philippi (1871) had at least one female and one male, and then both are syntypes.

Holotype: male, Isla Masatierra, Islas Juan Fernández (Universidad de Chile Collection, actually UMCE). Paratypes: 1 female (originally designated as “ allotype ”) and 2 males (UMCE) 2 males and 1 female (USNM). Dist.: Valparaíso (Valparaíso: Isla Robinson Crusoe—flying in a little clearing at Portezuelo El Camote and at foot of El Yunque under thick fronds of Blechnum ).
