Epiphragma (Epiphragma) breve View in CoL sp. nov.
( Figs. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 5 , 24–29 View FIGURES 24 – 29 )
Diagnosis. Vertex with one median brown stripe. Femora yellow with two dark brown rings, first near middle length of femora, second subapical, subequal to yellow tip in length. Wing with conspicuous brown patterning, chiefly ocelliform, with narrow dark brown margining. Inner gonostylus with tip obtuse and with several hairs at base. Interbase with a slender rod beyond base, about 2/3 length of gonocoxite, base dilated with one small ellipsoidal hole, interbase rods crossing at midlength, apex with sharp point curved inward.
Description. Male. Body length 10.3 mm, wing 12.2 mm.
Head. Yellow except occiput brown and dorsal surface of rostrum brown. Vertex with one median brown stripe. One median tubercle between eyes. Hairs on head black. Antenna 2.0 mm. Scape and pedicel brownish black, flagellum 13-segmented with two basal segments fused, fusion-segment pale yellow, succeeding segments brownish black, flagellomeres cylindrical, apical segments elongate, subequal to their longest verticils. Proboscis pale brown with black hairs; palpus black with black hairs.
Thorax. General brownish black with pale gray pollen. Pronotum brown with one black stripe. Prescutum with one irregular yellow median stripe. Scutum brownish black. Scutellum brown. Mediotergite yellowish brown with black lateral area. Pleura brownish black, variegated by paler areas. Hairs on thorax black. Coxae and trochanters yellowish brown; femora yellow with two dark brown rings, first near middle length of femora, second subapical, subequal to yellow tip in length; tibiae yellow with one spur; tarsi yellow except tips brown. Hairs on legs black.
Wing ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 5 ) with conspicuous brown patterning, chiefly ocelliform, with narrow dark brown margining.
Base of wing brown, connected with two large ocellate circles with flattened tips; one irregular band along cord connected with second circle; some pale spots around cell dm; one irregular patterning with seven branches toward wing tip, ending respectively at tips of veins R3, R4, cell R5, veins M2, M3, CuA1, CuA2; two brown areas across middle and tips of cells Cu and A1; cell A2 brown except two pale spots. Stigma solidly dark brown. R2+3+4 longer than R2+3; m-cu at near 1/3 length of cell dm. Halter 1.7 mm long, brownish black except base of stem yellow and apex of knob pale yellow.
Abdomen. Tergites brownish yellow with median area black. Sternites 1–7 brownish yellow, sternites 8–9 brownish black. Hairs on abdomen black.
Hypopygium ( Figs. 24–29 View FIGURES 24 – 29 ). Posterior margin of tergite 9 ( Fig. 24 View FIGURES 24 – 29 ) with small subtrigonal lobe on each side of median V-shaped notch. Outer gonostylus ( Fig. 25 View FIGURES 24 – 29 ) broad, with tip curved into spine. Inner gonostylus ( Fig. 26 View FIGURES 24 – 29 ) with obtuse tip and several hairs at base. Interbase ( Fig. 28 View FIGURES 24 – 29 ) with a slender rod beyond base, about 2/ 3 length of gonocoxite, base dilated with one small ellipsoidal hole, interbase rods crossing at midlength, apex with sharp point curved inward.
Female. Unknown.
Type material. Holotype male, Yunnan: Dulongjiang, Kongdang (1500 m), 27°52΄22ʺN 98°20΄20ʺE, 2007. V. 23 (Light trap), Xingyue Liu.
Distribution. China (Yunnan).
Etymology. The specific name refers to the short interbase.
Remarks. This new species is somewhat similar to E. yunnanense sp. nov. in having the similar patterning of the femora, but it can be separated from the latter by the patterning of the wing, inner gonostylus with the tip obtuse and lower margin near the base with several hairs, and interbase with a slender rod beyond base, about 2/3 the length of the gonocoxite, the base dilated with one small ellipsoidal hole, the interbase rods crossing at midlength, apex with sharp point and curved inward. In E. yunnanense sp. nov., the inner gonostylus is slender, at about 2/3 the length bent at a strong angle into a flattened blade; the interbase has a very long and slender rod beyond the base, nearly as long as the gonocoxite, arcuate in basal half, the base is triangular and connected with one small ellipsoidal hole.
