Diagnosis
Mediumsized fly, abdomen sometimes broadly reddish on sides; antenna with pedicel and basal 1/2–2/5 of flagellomere 1 reddish yellow, 3+4 dc, costal spine absent, abdominal syntergite 1+2 with strong median marginal setae.
Mesnil (1957) described this species, but the female was not known. Here are added some characters of the male together with those of the female.
Body length 11–13.5 mm.
Description
Male. Vertex about 1/7 head width; parafacial 2.5–3 times as wide as flagellomere 1; gena about 1/2 eye height; antenna falling short of lower margin of face by about 2/3 length of pedical and flagellomere 1 combined; base of antenna nearly level with lower 1/ 3 of eye height; pedicel with 2–3 strong setae that are as long as pedicel and flagellomere 1 combined; palpus reddish brown, rather short, about as long as flagellomere 1; 2+2 ac; lower calypter whitish; mid tibia usually with 2 ad setae, upper one sometimes fine or absent, and a strong v; hind tibia without apical pv; abdomen usually broadly reddish in ground color on sides, sometimes narrowly so and rarely entirely black, with fine short rather recumbent hairs on intermediate tergites; tergite 3 sometimes with 2 rather short median discal setae arranged close to marginal seta; tergite 4 with 2–4 median discal setae that are irregularly set and close to marginal setae. Posterior lobe of sternite 5 slightly pointed apically. Cerci strongly narrowed and bent ventrally on apical half, surstylus wide, bluntly rounded; distiphallus with membranous apical part 1.5 times as long as sclerotized basal part.
Female. Vertex about 1/3 head width; frontal vitta broad, nearly parallelsided, about as wide as frontoorbital plate at middle; parafacial 3–4 times as wide as flagellomere 1; facial carina broad on anterior surface; gena 0.7–0.8 eye height; inner vertical seta about 2/ 5 eye height; outer vertical seta about 1/2 as long as inner seta; ocellar seta subequal in length to inner vertical seta; 1 outwardly directed prevertical seta subequal in length to outer vertical seta; 2 proclinate orbital setae slightly shorter than ocellar seta; 10–12 frontal setae; vibrissa inserted above lower margin of face by about length of pedicel; base of antenna nearly level with lower 1/5 of eye height; palpus reddish yellow, nearly as long as pedicel and flagellomere 1 combined. Thoracic dorsum with 3 broad longitudinal vittae; mid tibia with 2–3 strong ad; claw and pulvillus shorter than 5th tarsomere. Abdomen black in ground color, evenly covered with grayish white pruinosity of tessellated appearance; syntergite 1+2 excavated to anterior margin of base of median marginal setae; tergite 3 usually without median discal seta; tergite 4 sometimes with 2 irregular median discal setae that are close to marginal setae; tergite 5 with 1–3 irregular discal setae that are close to marginal setae.

Remarks
This species is easily distinguished from other Dinera by its reddish antennal base that contrasts with the dark apical portion of flagellomere 1, and usually has broadly reddish abdomen in the male (but the abdominal color sometimes changed to dark especially in specimens from Kyushu, southern island of Japan).
