Taxonomy. Original description: Gasterosteus platygaster Kessler, 1859: 202 [Odessa and side arm of Dnieper River in Aleschki, Ukraine; Syntypes: BMNH 1897.7 .5.2 [ex ZIN] (2), ZIN 2350-51 View Materials (6, 6+)] .
