Type material. Papilio crinisus Cramer, 1780 was described based on an unspecified number of specimens from Suriname. A female syntype was found at NBC with the following labels: / Coll. Calkoen/ Museum Leiden/ ♀ /. Aiming to establish the correct identity of the species, this female specimen is hereby designated as the lectotype of Papilio crinisus and the following labels will be attached: / Lectotypus / Lectotypus Papilio crinisus Cramer, 1780 Siewert, Lemes, Mielke & Casagrande det. 2020/.
Diagnosis. FW length: males 21–25 mm (n=52) and females 24–26 mm (n=9). Augiades crinisus resembles Augiades vespasius vespasius in the color pattern of wings, but is distinguished by its well-developed hyaline spots on FW. The following combination of genitalic characters differentiates A. crinisus from the other Augiades species : uncus shorter than in A. vespasius ; valva with distal margin strongly bifid; lamella antevaginalis bilobed, with margin slightly serrated; lamella postvaginalis entirely sclerotized and broader than in A. vespasius .
Variation. The hyaline spots on FW are smaller in some specimens from Acre, North Brazil, and the color pattern of the wings is darker in specimens from Fonte Boa, Amazonas, North Brazil.
Immatures. Immatures were recorded on Lecythis lurida (Miers) S. A. Mori (Lecythidaceae) ( Moss 1949).
Distribution. Augiades crinisus is widely distributed in forested areas of Central and South America, with records from Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, French Guiana, and Brazil ( Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 ).
Taxonomic discussion. During the French occupation of the Netherlands, from 1789 to 1813, many private biological collections disappeared. At that time, Joan Calkoen gathered a significant number of specimens from several collections, and recovered many type specimens, including several from Cramer. After his death (in 1812), his collection was sold by his widow in 1814 and a large part of it was incorporated into the NBC, along with a catalog written by Calkoen himself where it is stated that he had some specimens that were described by Stoll and Cramer ( de Jong 2005). After examination of the material of the NBC collection, one female specimen that corresponds to the type series of P. crinisus was located, making the designation of a lectotype possible.
