Heterachthes hildebranti View in CoL sp. nov. male
( Figs 4–6 View FIGURES 1 – 6. 1 – 3 )
Coloration. Integument dark-brown; black on dorsal surface of head, pronotum and sides of prothorax; scape darkbrown, except for dark reddish-brown apex; antennomeres brown, gradually reddish-brown toward distal segments; mouthparts yellowish-brown, brown and dark-brown; area of metathorax close to metacoxae and metacoxae most yellowish-brown; elytra with two yellow macula on each elytron: one placed laterally on middle of dorsal basal half, subelliptical; one placed at beginning of distal half, oblique, from lateral margin to near suture. Head. Frons centrally not tumid; coarsely, abundantly, confluently punctate (punctures transverse) on large central area, coarsely, abundantly, confluently punctate (punctures longitudinal) laterally; with short, sparse setae, interspersed with some long, erect setae. Area between base of antennal tubercles and about posterior edge of upper eye lobes coarsely, confluently punctate, with short, sparse setae interspersed with long, erect setae close to eyes; remaining surface of vertex finely, abundantly vermiculate, glabrous. Area behind upper eye lobes coarsely, confluently punctate close to eye, finely, densely vermiculate toward prothoracic margin; with short, sparse setae close to eye, interspersed with some long setae. Area behind lower eye lobes tumid close to eye; coarsely, sparsely punctate on tumid area, moderately coarsely, abundantly punctate close to prothoracic margin (punctures distinctly finer than on tumid area), smooth between punctate areas; with short, moderately sparse setae on tumid area, interspersed with long, erect setae. Submentum coarsely, transversely striate, with fine, sparse punctures between striae; with short, moderately sparse setae interspersed with long, erect setae. Antennal tubercles elevated, subacuminate at apex; sculpture as on sides of frons. Longitudinal sulcus distinct from near clypeus to area between antennal tubercles. Genae coarsely, moderately abundantly punctate close to eye, finely punctate close to apex; with short, sparse setae. Distance between upper eye lobes 0.60 times length of scape; distance between lower eye lobes 0.85 times length of scape. Antennae 2.3 times elytral length (missing right antennomeres VIII– XI), reaching elytral apex at basal third of antennomere VIII; antennomeres III–VI somewhat tumid; antennomeres III–VIII with long, erect setae, mainly ventrally (sparser from III to VIII); antennomeres VIII–X with long setae at apex; antennal formula (ratio) based on antennomere III: scape = 0.53; pedicel = 0.13; IV = 0.67; V = 0.80; VI = 0.88; VII = 0.86; VIII = 0.85; IX = 0.76; X = 0.67; XI = 0.82.
Thorax. P rothorax 1.35 times longer than wide; laterally rounded at middle. Pronotal disc laterally with transverse, slightly elevated tubercle on anterior half; coarsely, abundantly punctate on each side of central region before and after tubercle (larger area before tubercle); remaining surface finely, sparsely punctate, except for some coarse punctures close to anterior margin; with narrow, transverse band of white pubescence on base, oblique band of white pubescence on each side of anterior third; remaining surface with very short and sparse setae intersperse with long, erect setae. Sides of prothorax coarsely, sparsely punctate, except for microsculptured area close to anterior margin, preceded by tumid, oblique area, narrowed toward pronotum; with transverse band of white pubescence from base to tumid area; remaining surface with long, sparse setae. Prosternum finely, sparsely punctate on basal half; striate, with sparse punctures on anterior half; pubescent on large area close to procoxal cavity on each side of basal half; remaining surface with short, sparse setae. Ventral side of mesothorax with white pubescence, not obscuring integument. Metepisterna with white pubescence. Metasternum finely, sparsely punctate, with coarse, sparse punctures between lateral side and center; laterally pubescent, interspersed with long, erect setae; with short, sparse setae interspersed with long, erect, sparse setae between sides and center; with sparse setae centrally. Scutellum pubescent.
Elytra. Finely, sparsely punctate, interspersed with 3 rows of coarse punctures; with long, erect, sparse, yellow setae, aligned in rows between basal and distal quarter; apex truncate.
Legs. Femora finely pubescent, interspersed with long, erect setae. Metatarsomere I about as long as II–III together; missing: left mesotibia and mesotarsus; left metatarsomere V.
Abdomen. Ventrites I–V coarsely, sparsely punctate centrally (distinctly finer on ventrite V); pubescent laterally, with sparser, short setae interspersed with long, erect setae centrally; apex of ventrite V slightly rounded.
Female. Integument dorsally mostly black; antennomeres brown; femora with dark reddish-brown areas. Antennae 1.8 times elytral length, reaching elytral apex at middle of antennomere IX; basal antennomeres not tumid.
Dimensions (mm). Holotype male/ paratype female. Total length (including mandibles), 14.90/13.80; prothoracic length, 3.30/2.60; anterior prothoracic width, 2.15/1.75; basal prothoracic width, 2.30/1.75; largest prothoracic width, 2.40/1.90; humeral width, 3.25/2.60; elytral length, 10.10/8.50.
Type material. Holotype male from MEXICO, Colima: San Antonio (Barranca de Agua, 3,800’), 20.VII.1995, J. Rifkind & A. Reifschneider col. ( USNM). Paratype female from MEXICO, Colima: 60 km E Minatitlán, 11.VII.2006, Skillman & Hildebrant col. ( FWSC).
Etymology. This species is dedicated to Don Hildebrant, one of the collectors of the paratype, for his enthusiasm and companionship in the field during collection expeditions with Frederick W. Skillman, Jr., who sent the type material for study.
Remarks. Heterachthes hildebranti sp. nov. differs from H. integripennis (Bates, 1885) as follows: antennomere III dorsally carinate in both sexes; pronotal tubercles slightly marked in both sexes; pronotal punctation less distinct. In H. integripennis the antennomere III may or may not be carinate in male (when present, the carina is always slightly marked), and is absent in female, pronotal tubercles with five distinct tubercles (mainly in female), and the pronotal punctures are very abundant (general appearance somewhat rugose in female). It differs from H. laesicollis (Germar, 1824) , mainly by the absence of central tubercle on pronotum, and by the elytral apex widely truncate (tubercle present and elytral apex narrowly truncate and bispinose in H. laesicollis ). See remarks on Heterachthes skillmani sp. nov. It differs from H. wappesi Martins & Napp, 1986 , mainly by pronotum not entirely pubescent.
