Antedon serripinna Carpenter, 1881: 175 , 182.

Oligometra serripinna: A.H. Clark, 1908a: 126 View in CoL ; 1947:216–217; A.M. Clark & Rowe, 1971: 10-11, 19.

Oligometra serripinna serripinna: A.H. Clark, 1936: 101 View in CoL ; 1947: 209, 216–232, pl. 27 (fig. 143), pl. 28 (figs. 153–155), pl. 29 (fig. 156).

Oligometra serripinna var. erinacea A.H. Clark, 1912: 323 View in CoL , 324; 1947: 216, 237–239, pl. 28 (figs. 148, 149).

Oligometra serripinna var. occidentalis A.H. Clark, 1911c: 3 View in CoL ; 1947: 216, 239–240, pl. 26 (fig. 136), pl. 28 (figs. 150, 151), pl. 30 (fig. 163).

Diagnosis.— A species of Oligometra with segments of P2 mostly, or largely, longer than, or at least as long as, broad; distal ends of pinnular prismatic ridges more or less strongly produced, or with one or more spines (from A.H. Clark, 1947).

Material examined.— None in this study. Specimens were previously collected at Bassas de Pedro by RIMS Investigator (A.H. Clark, 1947) .

Distribution.— From the Red Sea to Natal, South Africa, in the west to Tonga in the east, including Mauritius, Lakshadweep, Maldives, India (at least Tamil Nadu to Odisha), and New Caledonia, and from tropical Australia (Houtman Abrolhos, WA, to Tweed River, NSW) north to Hong Kong (A.H. Clark, 1947; A.M. Clark, 1972, 1974; Rowe & Gates, 1985; Messing, 1994). Depth range: shoreline to 91 m (? 183 m) (A.H. Clark, 1947).

Remarks.— Although A.H. Clark (1947, p. 216) distinguished three of his eight “varieties” of O. serripinna as “true geographical races or subspecies”, and four as “localized varieties” of typical O. serripinna (= O. serripinna serripinna ), all are considered subspecific rather than infra-subspecific under The International Code of Zoological Nomenclature articles 45.6.4 and 45.6.4.1 ( ICZN, 1999). Most recent sources have ignored these taxa (e.g., A.M. Clark & Rowe, 1971; A.M. Clark, 1972; Rowe & Gates, 1985; Messing, 1994; Sastry, 2007), with a few exceptions (e.g., Oligometra serripinna occidentalis in A.M. Clark (1974) and Marshall & Rowe (1981); Oligometra chinensis A.H. Clark, 1918 , in Kogo (1998)). The synonymy above includes only those subspecies recorded from the western Indian Ocean. All specimens previously collected in the Maldives and Lakshadweep have been identified as O. serripinna serripinna (A.H. Clark, 1947) .
