Taxonomy. Original description: Glyptosternon reticulatum McClelland, 1842: 384 View in CoL (Sir-i-Chusma, source of Kabul River, Afghanistan; no types known).— Afghanistan synonyms: Glyptosternon reticulatum ( McClelland, 1842) View in CoL .—Revisions: Berg (1949: 921); Jayaram (2006: 259).—Illustration: Berg (1949: 922-923, figs. 670– 673).

Status in Afghanistan. First record from Afghanistan by McClelland (1842: 574) as Glyptosternon reticulatus ; confirmed by Coad (1981: 8; 2014: 279; 2015: 229).—Afghanistan materials: FMNH.

Distribution and habitat. Distribution in Afghanistan:Amu Darya, Bamian River, Kabul River drainages.—General distribution: South Asia: upper Indus River basin ( Afghanistan, Tadzhikistan, Pakistan and India).—Habitat: This species is a mountain stream species. It occurs in fast-flowing rivers and streams in mountainous areas, clinging to stones and rocks over sandy and sandstone bottoms; it is also found in some mountain and piedmont reservoirs. Freshwater.

Economic importance. Locally consumed, but of no commercial importance.

Conservation. Conservation status in Afghanistan: Unknown.—IUCN: LC ( Karimov 2020f).—Threats: FIT, CLI, CON, ABS, HAB, EUT.—Moderate sensitivity to human activities.—Not considered as a keystone species.— Decline status: Significant decline.—Moderate priority for conservation action.
