Status in Afghanistan. First record from Afghanistan by McClelland (1842: 575) as Perilampus ostreographus ; confirmed by Coad (1981: 10; 2014: 159; 2015: 227).—Afghanistan materials: BMNH.
Distribution and habitat. Distribution in Afghanistan: Kabul River.—General distribution: Afghanistan, Pakistan, northern and north-eastern India, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Nepal.—Habitat: The species is found in streams in the plains and submontane regions. Freshwater.
Economic importance. Valuable for the aquarium trade.
Conservation. Conservation status in Afghanistan: Unknown.—IUCN: LC (Vishwanath 2010b).—Threats: No information available, although general habitat destruction may cause significant decline in its population.— Low sensitivity to human activities.—Not considered as a keystone species.—Decline status: Stable.—Low priority for conservation action.
