Original description: Cyprinus ariza Hamilton, 1807: 344 , pl. 31 [Vedawati stream, tributary of Tungabahdra River, Krishna basin, southern India; no types preserved].— Afghanistan synonyms: Cirrhinus ariza ( Hamilton 1807) ; Gobio limnophilus McClelland, 1839 ; Gobio isurus McClelland, 1839 ; Gobio hamiltonii Jerdon, 1849 ; Chondrostoma gangeticum Valenciennes, 1844 ; Cirrhina dussumieri Valenciennes, 1842 ; Gobio bovianus Jerdon, 1849 ; Cirrhina bengalensis Bleeker, 1853 ; Cyprinus bangon Hamilton, 1839 .—Revisions: Roberts (1997: 183) as Cirrhinus ariza, Yang et al. Status in Afghanistan. First record from Afghanistan by McClelland (1842) as Gobio limnophilus ; treated by Coad (1981: 10) as a synonym of Cirrhinus reba . —Afghanistan materials: None.

Distribution and habitat. Distribution in Afghanistan: Kabul River.—General distribution: Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.—Habitat: This species inhabits clear rivers and tanks. A plankton and detritus feeder. Breeding takes place in flooded shallows in june-september. Freshwater.

Economic importance. Commercially important.

Conservation. Conservation status in Afghanistan: Unknown.—IUCN: LC ( Dahanukar 2010a).—Threats: The threats to this species are not known.—Low sensitivity to human activities.—Not considered as a keystone species.—Decline status: Unknown.—Low priority for conservation action.
