Tetracha species (Zerm et al. 2001). They live in open areas of sandy or loamy

beaches in white and blackwater floodplains. Their life cycles and habitats have been described in Zerm and Adis (2001 a, b). As species differ considerably in life cycle type and habitat preferences, the question arose as to the significance of flight in these species. In this study, we examined differences in the frequency of flight ability as inferred from flight muscle development. Specifically we looked for differences among species and between sexes within species. We further analysed the relationship of flight ability with life cycle types, behaviour and habitats.
