Type species: Barydesmus kerri Cook, 1896 , by original designation.
Diagnosis. Differs from other genera of the family in the gonopodal telopodite being more stout, suberect to only moderately and smoothly curved, with acropodite simple, directed anteriorly to anteromedially, but retrorse in relation to and curved towards coxite, bifurcate and divided into a shorter proximal solenomere (sl), this directed subdorsally, and a longer, distal, regularly curved and typically flagelliform lateral branch (lb, = “tibiotarsus”) (cf. Shelley & Martínez-Torres 2013).
Composition. Currently, 53 species, from Costa Rica to northwestern Brazil ( Recuero & Sánchez-Vialas 2018), including the new congener described below.
