Macropterous male. BL 6.30–6.50; HL 0.85; HW 1.15; ANT I 1.05, ANT II 0.95, ANT III lost, ANT IV lost; EYE 0.33; PL 2.60–2.65; PW 2.21–2.30. Macropterous female. BL 6.20; HL 0.85; HW 1.15; ANT I 1.03, ANT II 0.90, ANT III lost, ANT IV lost; EYE 0.33; PL 2.65; PW 2.30.

Diagnosis. Head, pronotum, almost entire femur and tibiae blackish. Forewing with a basal yellow macula starting from humeral angle and ending at posterior margin of pronotum; in most specimens also an apical narrow, elongated white macula ( Fig. 13 View FIGURE 13 A). Legs without spines. Male abdominal sternite VII posteriorly with a pair of distinct and slightly divergent projections.

Discussion. The variation in the presence of the apical white macula ( Figs 13 View FIGURE 13 A–B) has been observed in P. basalis , and previously mentioned for P. itatiayana by Drake (1951). After comparing specimens of both forms of wing marking, it was not possible to detect any other morphological differences between them, which leaded to their assignment as the same species. Paravelia basalis is similar to P. polhemusi sp. nov. ( Fig. 11 View FIGURE 11 ), but can be separated from it by the more elongated shape of the apical macula of forewings (when present), and by the absence of spines on hind femur, which are present in P. polhemusi sp. nov.

Material examined. Brazil, Minas Gerais: 1 macropterous male ( DPIC), Brumadinho, Retiro das Pedras, 20º04’S / 44º00’W, 01.II.2004, (G.J.C. Vianna). Espírito Santo: 2 macropterous male, 2 macropterous females ( MZUSP), Santa Teresa, São Lourenço Waterfall, moist moss, 02.XI.1944, (Schubart); 1 macropterous male, 1 macropterous female ( DPIC), Espir.[ito] Santo, only information on the label [first record from Espírito Santo State]. Rio de Janeiro: 1 macropterous female ( INPA) [specimen without apical macula], Rio de Janeiro, Tijuca, II.1940, (Leoberto). São Paulo: 1 macropterous male, 2 macropterous females ( MZUSP), Campos do Jordão, 1906, (Luederwaldt) [same material examined by Moreira & Barbosa (2011)].
