Diagnosis. The forewing markings of T. latistriata resemble very closely those of T. contracta and T. projecta , but the cream to light brownish basal streak near the costa is broader than those of the latter species. The males of T. latistriata can be distinguished from those of related species by the coloration of labial palpi: segment II is entirely creamy white in T. latistriata whereas the basal half of outer surface is fuscous to black in other species. The male genitalia are somewhat similar to those of T. projecta , but the valval apex of T. latistriata is rounded whereas it is shortly produced on costa in the latter species. The female genitalia of T. latistriata can be differentiated from related species by the colliculum situated more remotely from the ostium bursae.
Description. Adult ( Figs 3A View FIGURE 3 , 11G View FIGURE 11 ). Wingspan 7.0−10.0 mm. Head whitish grey, frons creamy. Labial palpus creamy white; in male, segment I long, fuscous to black on outer surface; segment II slightly shorter than I; segment III three times as long as II, fuscous to black on ventral surface, grey on dorsal surface distally, pointed at apex, hair pencil nearly reaching apex of III; in female, segment I very short, fuscous on outer surface, segment II fuscous in basal 2/3 of outer surface; segment III slightly longer than II, more slender than that of male, fuscous to black on ventral surface, pointed at apex. Antenna with scape creamy white, posterior margin fuscous; flagellum fuscous to black except basal half of dorsal surface creamy white, male cilia approximately twice as long as diameter. Thorax cream, often mixed with light brown or light grey, medially with two rows of fuscous longitudinal streaks. Tegula cream, often mixed with light brown or light grey, inner margin fuscous to black. Forewing ground color dark brown to fuscous; apical area brown, with two inwardly oblique, dark fuscous costal strigulae alternating with cream scales before apical spot; apical spot small and round, bordered inwardly by metallic silver scales, apex falcate; other markings cream mixed with pale yellow-brown: two fine, outwardly oblique costal streaks from basal 1/2 and 3/4, respectively, first streak longer and nearly reaching second streak, second streak running toward tornal streak but interrupted by metallic silver scales at half way across wing; from base to basal 1/3 a longitudinal streak near costa; below this, from base to distal 1/5, two longitudinal streaks very closely running toward apex, confluent beyond middle; below this, a short longitudinal streak running from base in parallel with former, confluent with former at basal 1/5; from near basal 1/3 of dorsum an outwardly oblique streak, confluent with former streaks at middle of wing; from distal 1/3 or 1/4 of dorsum a slender, inwardly oblique streak, broadened at base; beyond and parallel to this an inwardly directed V-shaped marking, nearly reaching former longitudinal streak anteriorly, often interrupted at middle by dark scales, not reaching dorsum posteriorly; fringe on apical area and termen fuscous with base pale yellow-brown, remaining fringe grey. Hindwing dark grey except subapex cream and apex black; fringe grey except apical area black terminally. Legs creamy white slightly mixed with yellow-brown; fore coxa suffused with fuscous on outer surface laterally, fore femur, tibia and tarsus black on outer surface; mid femur black at apex, mid tibia with two black oblique streaks on outer surface, tinged with black at apex; hind tibia with a black oblique streak on outer surface; mid and hind tarsi black on outer surface except apex of each segment white.
Male sternum VIII ( Fig. 25E View FIGURE 25 ). Subtriangular, shortly bifid posteriorly.
Male genitalia ( Fig. 36C View FIGURE 36 ). Uncus tongue-shaped, rounded apically. Gnathos hook simple, moderately long. Tegumen approximately 4 times as long as uncus, anterior margin deeply concave. Valva with base narrow, ventral margin gradually widening beyond middle, then constricted at distal 1/3; distal 1/3 spatulate, densely setose, rounded at apex. Anellus lobe slender, 1/5 length of valva, narrowly elliptical, with ventral margin setose; apical bristle 1/2 length of anellus lobe, strongly hooked. Juxta with base of inner margin broadly convex. Vinculum narrowly produced medially on posterior margin. Saccus very short, subtriangular, not exceeding tegumen pedunculus. Aedeagus with basal half dilated, then slightly narrowed to before apex, truncate at apex; a narrow interior sclerite arising from distal 1/4, exceeding apex of aedeagus.
Female genitalia ( Fig. 53A View FIGURE 53 ). Papillae anales weakly sclerotized, setose. Apophyses anteriores slightly longer than 1/2 length of apophyses posteriores. Segment VIII with numerous round patches, each patch consisting of minute spines; tergum VIII with deep indentation at middle of posterior margin; sternum VIII longer than tergum VIII, broadly concave posteriorly, convex on anterior margin, anterior half covered with a spinous intersegmental membrane, lateral margins with a linear sclerotization near ostium bursae. Ostium bursae large, rounded. Ductus bursae narrow at base, gradually broadening and merging with corpus bursae; colliculum present near base of ductus bursae; ductus seminalis anterior to colliculum, arising from posterior 1/6 of ductus bursae + corpus bursae. Corpus bursae pyriform, granular; signum round, situated at middle, bulged inward, with minute denticles.
Variations. The species shows minor variations in forewing color and patterns, especially in the length and width of streaks.
Distribution. China (Hainan, Yunnan).
Etymology. The species name is derived from Latin, latus (broad) and striatus (striped), referring to the presence of a broad basal streak on the forewing.
Remarks. The species was included in the phylogenetic study of Thiotrichinae ( Lee et al. 2021) as Thiotricha sp. 10. The genetic sequences are available from GenBank.
