Pseudotremia hobbsi Hoffman View in CoL
P. hobbsi Hoffman 1950 View in CoL , p. 90. Shear, 1972, p. 191.
Type locality: Chestnut Ridge Cave, 2 mi north of Clifton Forge, Alleghany Co., VIRGINIA. Male holotype in USNM.
New Records: WEST VIRGINIA: Greenbrier Co.: Knight’s Saltpetre Cave, 24 July 1999, D. Hubbard, ɗ, Ψ; Pocahontas Co.: Snedegar’s Cave of Friar’s Hole system, 7 March 1972, D. Culver, R. Baroody, ɗ.
Notes: This large species is primarily epigean, and though frequently collected in caves, it is darkly pigmented, with large eyes. Records have been published from Greenbrier, Monroe and Pocahontas Cos., West Virginia, and Alleghany, Botetourt, Craig and Montgomery Cos., Virginia, a compact area straddling the Virginia-West Virginia border. At both the new localities listed above it is syntopic with the troglobiont P. fulgida . The Hobbsi group of species designated by me in 1972 includes all the West Virginia species, with the exception of armesi and the new species kerboi , described below. The species are united by a subapical spine on the gonopod median angiocoxite, and a long, curved, acute vental median colpocoxite process. Except for lusciosa and fulgida , all are also large, well-pigmented, epigean or troglophilic species. More intensive field work is needed in this group of species to more clearly establish species boundaries; indeed, to determine which named populations may be species and which subspecies of hobbsi .
