Cumbre belli eberti View in CoL [misidentification]; Pinheiro & Emery, 2006. Biota Neotropica 6 (3): 6.- Mielke; Emery & Pinheiro, 2008. Revta bras. Ent. 52 (2): 286.
Diagnosis. Rufocumbre emeryi sp. nov. is distinguished from all species of Rufocumbre by the uncus slightly bifid, with pointed arms; ampulla wider than base of valva, with the proximal margin pointed; distal spine of harpe shorter, not exceeding the distal margin of the ampulla ( Fig. 34 View FIGURES 33–34 ); lamella antevaginalis absent (as in R. celioi sp. nov.); distal margin of the lamella postvaginalis with two long projections separated from each other by a short distance ( Fig. 39 View FIGURES 38–39 ).
Description. Forewing length: Male 13.9-17.5 mm, female 15.2-17 mm.
Forewing dorsal ( Figs 5, 7 View FIGURES 1–20 , 22 View FIGURES 21–25 ): brand with the inferior projection short.
Hind wing ventral ( Figs 6, 8 View FIGURES 1–20 ): basal and postdiscal bands light orange, without gray to purple scales on the basal band; discal band separated from submarginal band by a short distance, with its distal margin angled.
Male genitalia ( Fig. 34 View FIGURES 33–34 ): Uncus slightly bifid, with short and pointed arms; sacculus with about 1/5 of the width of valva, proximal margin close to the base of valva; ampulla wider than base of valva, proximal margin pointed; distal spine of harpe short, not exceeding the distal margin of ampulla; aedeagus about 2.3 times longer than the combined length of tegumen+uncus; aedeagus distal margin bifid, with divergent projections; cornutus as a small flattened plate with a short spine at the middle.
Female genitalia ( Figs 39 View FIGURES 38–39 , 44 View FIGURES 43–47 ): Lamella antevaginalis absent; distal margin of the lamella postvaginalis with two long projections separated from each other by a short distance; ductus bursae with an irregular sclerotized ring near the insertion with corpus bursae; corpus bursae with two weak lateral lines of signa, shorter than half of the corpus bursae.
Comments. Rufocumbre emeryi sp. nov. was erroneously identified as C. belli eberti in surveys on the butterfly fauna from the Central Brazilian Plateau ( Pinheiro & Emery 2006, Mielke et al. 2008). Both species are easily distinguished by the presence of gray to purple scales on the ventral hind wing basal band of R. eberti stat. nov., comb. nov. ( Figs 10, 12 View FIGURES 1–20 ). However, as this character may not be clearly seen in old or damaged specimens, the study of the genitalia is always needed. Males of R. emeryi sp. nov. are distinguished from R. eberti ( Fig. 35 View FIGURES 35–37 ) by the shorter distal spine of harpe, never exceeding the distal margin of ampulla ( Fig. 34 View FIGURES 33–34 ), while the females of the former ( Fig. 39 View FIGURES 38–39 ) do not have the lamella antevaginalis, whereas it is present in R. eberti ( Fig. 40 View FIGURES 40–42 ).
Geographical distribution and phenology. This species was recorded only in areas of Cerrado vegetation of the states of Mato Grosso, Goiás, Distrito Federal and Minas Gerais, between 350 and 1200 m ( Fig. 55 View FIGURE 55 ). Specimens were collected in January, April to July, and December.
Etymology. This new species is named in memory of our friend the late Eduardo Oliveira Emery, in gratitude to his extensive support. Eduardo always kindly brought us with relevant information about the Lepidoptera fauna from Central Brazil, including specimens of R. emeryi sp. nov.
