Diagnosis. Rostrum short, spinelike, slightly upward, reaches the half of antennular peduncle, dorsal and ventral margins unarmed. Basal segment of antennular peduncle with stylocerite short, broad and acute, not reaches the half this segment and without anterolateral spine. Scaphocerite reduced to small triangular scale. Carapace with antennal short and broad spinelike a tooth. Mandible without palp. First pereopods overreaches the antennular peduncle with carpus and sometimes part of merus, fingers smaller than palm. Second pereopods equal in shape and unequal in size, fingers smaller than palm, dorsal margin of dactyli convex and cutting edge with a tooth near the base, fixed fingers straight and with a tooth near the base. Third to fifth pereopods with bifid dactyli. Abdomen first five somite rounded, sixth somite with pleura ending in a sharp point on the posterolaterally. Telson with 2 pairs of dorsal spines and 3 pairs of spines on posterior margin.
Distribution. Western Atlantic: USA (West of Florida), Bermudas, Virgin Islands, Brazil (Pará, Maranhão, Pernambuco [Fernando de Noronha]). Eastern Pacific: Gulf of California ( Figure 23 View FIGURE 23 ). ( Holthuis, 1951; Chace, 1972; Coelho et al., 2006).
Material examined. None.
Ecological notes. The species occurs from shallow water to 18 m deep, usually in sponges or coral rock ( Chace, 1972; Ramos-Porto & Coelho, 1998).
