Oocyclus maculatus Sharp, 1882 View in CoL
( Figs. 2 View FIGURE 2 D, 5B, 7)
Oocyclus maculatus Sharp, 1882: 63 View in CoL .
Material examined (1 ex.). VENEZUELA: Táchira State: Chorro el Indio National Park, 7°43’23.81”N, 72° 11.31.13 ”W, 1225 m, 16.vii.2009, leg. Short & García, wet rock and rock seeps, VZ09-0716-01A (1 male, MIZA).
Diagnosis. Smaller species (less than 4.0 mm). Posterolateral corners of pronotum broadly rounded. Procoxae spinose. Elytra without distinct rows of larger systematic punctures or clumps of setae. Elytral suture not raised. Elytral margins not explanate, and without a fringe of long setae. Aedeagus as in Figure 5 View FIGURE 5 B.
There are no other species of Oocyclus in Venezuela that have both rounded posterolateral corners of the pronotum and lack rows of punctures and setae on the elytra.
Distribution. Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama, and Venezuela (Táchira State).
Remarks. This species was redescribed and treated in detail by Short and Perkins (2004). The single male Venezuelan specimen agrees in all diagnostic characters with typical Central American representatives, including the morphology of the aedeagus. It was collected on a rock seep at the edge of the “Mérida Andes” near Colombia. As pointed out by Short and Perkins (2004), this species exhibits a wide degree of variation, particularly in the dorsal coloration and may represent a species complex.
