Measurements. BL = 15.1−15.6 mm (mean = 15.4 mm), HW = 2.5−2.6 mm (mean = 2.5 mm), EYL = 0.9−1.0 mm (mean = 0.9 mm), PL = 3.2−3.4 mm (mean = 3.3 mm), PW = 3.5−3.8 mm (mean = 3.6 mm), EL = 8.7−9.0 mm (mean = 8.9 mm), EW = 5.0− 5.6 mm (mean = 5.4 mm), ratio PW/PL = 1.03−1.15 (mean = 1.10), EL/EW = 1.58−1.78 (mean = 1.66), EW/PW = 1.43−1.53 (mean = 1.48).
Description. Head and pronotum black, vertex with weak coppery shine, pronotum with strong coppery metallic shine laterally; elytra black, with a round yellow spot at posterior third of each elytron; ventral surface, coxae, trochanters, femora, tibiae and mandibles black, tarsi brown; antennomeres 1–3 black, 4–11 brown.
Head with vertex convex, finely and sparsely punctate; occiput densely punctate; genae glabrous, oblique, as long as one-fifth of eyes in dorsal view; lateral margins of mentum rounded. Pronotum ( Fig. 22 View FIGURES 20–25 ) ovoid, widest in the middle; lateral margins distinctly bordered, sinuate before posterior angles; disc glabrous, finely and sparsely punctate, median line distinct, shallow; posterior angles nearly rectangular, rounded at apex; base coarsely punctate; basal foveae deep, coarsely punctate. Elytra moderately convex, widest in the middle; intervals ( Fig. 28 View FIGURES 26–31 ) convex, intervals 2−8 smooth and glabrous medially, with a row of punctures and pubescence laterally (near to striae), intervals 1 and 9 punctate and pubescent throughout; yellow spot covering intervals 4−8. Proepisterna very sparsely punctate. Claws ( Fig. 34 View FIGURES 32–37 ) curved, with 6−8 very short teeth. Aedeagus ( Figs. 42, 43 View FIGURES 38–47 ) thin in lateral view, apical lamella rounded and very short. Gonostylus ( Fig. 50 View FIGURES 48–51 ) with six short spines on outer margin.
Etymology. Latinized name li refers to Li ethnic nationality living in Hainan Island.
Remarks. Chlaenius li is an endemic species to Hainan Island ( Fig. 52 View FIGURE 52 ). It is similar to C. freyi in having wholly black femora, and elytron with yellow spot at posterior third, but differs from the latter in head, pronotum glabrous and each of intervals 2−8 glabrous medially ( Fig. 28 View FIGURES 26–31 ), gonostylus ( Fig. 50 View FIGURES 48–51 ) with six spines on outer margin in contrast to head and pronotum pubescent, all elytral intervals regularly pubescent, gonostylus with only four spines in C. freyi .
