Laelia dawsonii View in CoL fo. chilapensis (Soto Arenas) E.A. Pérez-García & Cetzal, comb. nov.
Basionym:— Laelia anceps View in CoL fo. chilapensis Soto Arenas, Orquídea (Mexico City) (1993: 138).
Type:— MEXICO. Guerrero: Mun.
Laelia dawsonii View in CoL is relatively scarce, forming isolated populations distributed along the Sierra Madre in Mexico’s Pacific watershed ( Soto-Arenas 1993, 2003). Two geographical forms of this species have been recognized; the dawsonii View in CoL form has a wide distribution in the state of Oaxaca, but its populations are very scarce and have been intensely looted, in such a way that most of the known specimens come from rustic cultivation in houses. These plants were maintained for many years (maybe several decades) and their flowers are collected for sale at local markets or for the religious festivities of “La Concepción” and Guadalupe virgins in December that are celebrated in Juquila, southern Oaxaca. Specimens of this taxon have also been found in the state of Jalisco, but wild specimens have not yet been reported in the scientific literature ( Soto-Arenas 2003). The dawsonii View in CoL form is recognized by having white flowers, with magenta lines in the labellum, and sometimes with a purple stain in the middle lobe of the labellum. The other recognized form for this taxon is L. dawsonii View in CoL fo. chilapensis, which is practically only known from cultivated specimens in the Chilapa region, in the state of Guerrero ( Soto-Arenas 2008). Laelia dawsonii View in CoL fo. dawsonii View in CoL has an elevation range between 1700 to 1900 m ( Soto-Arenas 2003), whereas the fo. chilapensis grows around 1400–1900 m ( Soto-Arenas 2008).
