Lixus bidens Capiomont, 1874 View in CoL
Lixus bidens Capiomont, 1874: 488 View in CoL
Current status: Lixus bidens Capiomont, 1874 View in CoL is a valid species.
Type. In Capiomont’s collection at MNHN, is a male (pinned through the right elytron, left antenna lacking segments 3–7 and club) bearing the handwritten labels: “Sicile”, “Cap.” and “ Bidens , Aubé”, and fitting the description with type locality as Sicile. It is here designated as lectotype with “ Lectotypus, 3, Lixus bidens Capiomont, L. Gültekin des., 2004”.
Remarks. This species was described from more than one specimen since the original description refers to other specimens in the Reiche, Aubé and Chevrolat collections. The study of the type confirmed the current interpretation of the species. Lixus bidens can be recognized by the rostrum cylindrical, subequal in length to prothorax, nearly straight and narrowed from base to antennal insertion; middle and hind tibia widened at apex, apical fringe continued on lateral sides; elytra apex sharp, apices not divergent. Lixus bidens is related to Lixus umbellatarum (Fabricus, 1787) and Lixus siculus Boheman but differs from the latter in lacking a convex line on elytral interval 3 at base and lacking divergent protuberances of the elytral apex; apex of middle and hind tibia of L. umbellaturum strongly widened, apical fringe longer on lateral sides, rostrum longer and curved, tarsi distinctly wider.
