status

Haeromys minahassae (Thomas, 1896) View in CoL . Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist., ser. 6, 18:247.

TYPE LOCALITY: Indonesia, Sulawesi, NE Sulawesi, Minahassa, Rurukan .

DISTRIBUTION: Sulawesi; recorded only from the NE peninsula and central core ( Musser, 1990).

COMMENTS: External, cranial, and dental features clearly distinguish Sulawesi species from those on Borneo and Palawan. Two species occur in C Sulawesi, one restricted to tropical lowland evergreen rain forest, the other (yet to be named and described) found only in montane rain forest ( Musser, 1990; Musser and Holden, 1991). Karyotype is primitive, spermatozoal morphology is distinctive ( Musser, 1990; Breed and Musser, 1991).
