Acteon View in CoL ” sp. 1

Figs 22A, 23

MATERIAL EXAMINED. — Loyalty Ridge. BIOGEOCAL: stn DW 313 , 20°59’S, 166°59’E, 1600-1640 m, 1 dd GoogleMaps .

DISTRIBUTION. — Single specimen collected from New Caledonia (Fig. 23), in 1600-1640 m .

DESCRIPTION. — Shell morphology. Length 7 mm, width 4 mm (single specimen examined). Shell thin, wide and short, with convex sides (Fig. 22A). Body whorl large, about 3/4 of the shell length. Spire short, conical, with 3 whorls. Suture channeled. Umbilicus closed. Aperture short and wide, wider anteriorly and narrowing abruptly near its middle portion. The aperture is about 3/4 of the body whorl length. The anterior end of the aperture is expanded into a very short lip. Columellar margin thickened, straight and simple, with no teeth. Sculpture of a number of punctuated spiral grooves. The punctuations are large, oval, and separated from each other within each groove. The grooves are separated by gaps that are wider than the grooves, with the exception of the 3 grooves closest to the suture that are wider than the rest and separated by narrow gaps. Colour uniformly grey.

Anatomy. Unknown. All shells collected lacked soft parts.

REMARKS. — “ Acteon ” sp. 1 is similar to “ Acteon ” cohibilis n. sp. in shell morphology. However, these two species are easily distinguishable by several features such as the shape of the columella, which is straight and simple in “ Acteon ” sp. 1 and oblique and denticulate in “ A. ” cohibilis, the sculpture, with larger punctuations in “ Acteon ” sp. 1, and the general shape of the shell, which is more elongate in “ A. ” cohibilis.

Another similar Indo-Pacific species is Acteon austrinus Watson, 1883 , originally described from the Bass Straight, southern Australia (Watson 1883). The shell of a syntype of this species (BMNH 1887.2.9.2119) is more elongate than that of “ Acteon ” sp. 1, the columella more oblique, and the aperture comparatively smaller.

It is very likely that “ Acteon ” sp. 1 is an undescribed species of Acteonidae , but it is not named here because of the lack of sufficient material. A definitive generic placement for this species is not possible until complete specimens become available for study.
