Liposcelis volcanorum View in CoL sp. n.

Diagnosis. Species of group I-Ab, nasus complex (characters of group and complex noted above). Differing from L. maunakea as noted in diagnosis of that species. Differing from L. nasus in more elongate head, having one instead of two PNS, and in details of the spermapore region.

Female color. Compound eyes black. Head white over vertex and sides; frons pale rusty brown; postclypeus somewhat darker rusty brown with several (5–6) slender dark red longitudinal stripes; ecdysial lines faintly indicated by reddish-purple pigment granules. Prothorax white, synthorax pale grayish-brown. Abdomen white.

Female general structural characters. Eight ommatidia in eye (N=9). No structural indication of ecdysial lines of head. Subdistal sensillar group of P4 ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 12 – 18 ): 2 long, slender, setiform (1 distal, 1 sub-basal), all others shorter, dactyloid, the largest of these basal. Lacinial tip as in L. maunakea ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 1 – 11 ). Mesonotal parapsidal regions indicated by faint, slightly indented lines. Abdominal terga 1 and 2 slightly and uniformly more weakly sclerotized than rest of abdomen. Base of ovipositor valvulae extremely short, bifid ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 12 – 18 ). Tshaped sclerite with arms each much longer than stem ( Fig. 15 View FIGURES 12 – 18 ). Region of spermapore formed as swelling of sheath surrounding spermathecal duct ( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 12 – 18 ).

Female sculpture of integument ( Fig. 28 View FIGURES 28 – 30 ). As described for L. maunakea except areoles of vertex not completely disintegrating around eyes.

Female chaetotaxy. Vertex with relatively sparse setae (16–21 µm) shorter than distances between their bases. Pronotum ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 12 – 18 ) with relatively long SI (~ 49 µm) 1 PNS ca. two-thirds length of SI; prosternum ( Fig. 18 View FIGURES 12 – 18 ) with 4 setae, 2 outers longer, 2 medians shorter (1 of 7 observed individuals lacking 1 median). SII (~39 µm) slightly shorter than SI. Mesosternum ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 12 – 18 ) with 7 (8) setae in anterior row. Setae very sparse on abdominal terga 1–7; terminal segments ( Fig. 19 View FIGURES 19 – 27 ): tg8 with short setae forming an anterior and posterior row with scattered setae between; M 8 differentiated (~ 42µm); Md 9 ~57µm, Mv 9 ~ 60µm; Md 10 ~ 66µm, Mv 10 ~ 65µm; D ~ 46µm; Se ~ 50µm.

Female measurements (N= 6 for all; means in parentheses). BL= 1181–1244 (1205); V= 252–266 (259); P4= 71–83 (77); FL= 279–308 (291); FW= 142–166 (157); T= 202–212 (209); t1= 72–84 (78); t2= 30–34 (32); t3= 41–44 (43).

Male color. As described for female.

Male general structural characters. Five ommatidia in eye. No structural indication of ecdysial lines of head. Subdistal sensillar group of P4 and lacinial tip as described for female. Mesothoracic parapsidal region not indicated. Abdominal terga 1 and 2 with 3 slender anterior transverse sclerites heavily sculptured with transverse areoles; the areoles of anterior-most sclerite smooth, those of the other 2 bearing minute tubercles; these followed posteriorly by a broad transverse sclerite (entire tg 2?) lacking areoles. Phallosome typical of the genus ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 11 ) (but see section “A note on the phallosome of Liposcelis ”).

Male sculpture of integument. As described for female except as noted for abdominal tg 1.

Male chaetotaxy. Vertex with very sparse, short setae (12–15µm). Pronotum as described for female (SI = 33µm) except single PNS only ca. half length of SI. Prosternum with 3 setae, long laterals and single, shorter median. SII slightly shorter than SI (27µm). Mesosternum with 6 setae in anterior row. Abdominal setae as described for female. Measurements of clunial setae: M 8= 25µm; Md 9= 46µm; Mv 9= 50µm; Md 10= 63µm; Mv 10= 61µm; SE= 38µm.

Male measurements (N= 2 for all). BL= 837–912; V= 191; P4= 64–76; FL= 226–239; FW= 120–126; T= 167–177; t1= 63–66; t2= 33–34; t3= 43–44; Md 10= 64µm; Mv 10=59µm; D= 35µm; SE= 37µm.

Specimens examined. Holotype female. USA. Hawaii. Hawaii Co. Mauna Kea Forest Reserve. Ahumoa Site, 19°42’N, 155°36’W, 1880 m, pitfall trap, 20 August 2004 (P. Krushelnycky et al.). Paratypes: 2 males, 2 females with same data as holotype; other paratypes: HAP1, 2 females, HAL2, 2 females, 7 nymphs; HPL1, 2 females; HPP1, 1 male, 12 females (all types to BPBM except 1 male, 2 female paratypes to ELM, 2 female paratypes to HUIC).
