Diagnosis. Mostly supported on the characters previously used by Simon (1898) and Lehtinen (1967) we diagnose the genus Malthonica (at least in the Iberian Peninsula and relative to the other Tegenariini) by the following characteristics: small to medium body size; procurved eye rows with the median anterior eyes having a smaller diameter than the lateral anterior; median eyes in a wide trapezium; narrow clypeus, slightly smaller than the diameter of the lateral anterior eyes; posterior margin of the chelicerae with a large tooth followed by a row of minute teeth; clearly two-segmented posterior spinnerets, with the apical segment slightly shorter than the basal segment; strongly reduced colulus; basal median apophysis; trochanter moderately notched; metatarsi with two long trichobothria.
