Gracilaria mammillaris (Montagne) M.Howe
Thallus cartilaginous, reddish purple, 6–12 cm in length, extended, with flattened axes in cross section, 270–295 μm x 885–940 μm in diameter. Trichotomous or irregular branching; branches without evident basal constrictions but with variable diameters along with a tendency to decrease towards the bases, with smooth surfaces and curved apices ( Fig. 44 View FIGURES 39–50. 39–41 ). Pseudoparenchymatous organization, with an abrupt transition between medulla and cortex ( Fig. 45 View FIGURES 39–50. 39–41 ). Medulla with six layers of irregular cells, 22–58 μm x 66–110 μm in diameter. Subcortex with two layers of elongated cells, 8–10 μm x 16–28 μm in diameter. Cortex with 1–2 layers of cells, markedly pigmented, ovoid, 4–4.5 μm x 5.4–7.5 μm in diameter. Cystocarps without constrictions at the base, 470–490 μm x 600–760 μm in diameter ( Fig. 45 View FIGURES 39–50. 39–41 ).
