Gracilaria cervicornis (Turner) J.Agardh
Thallus delicate, smooth, purple red, 9–16 cm long, with flattened axes in cross section, 460–580 μm x 1500 –1650 μm in diameter. Main axes branching dichotomously; branches constricted at their bases, covered with marginal proliferations arranged alternately opposite giving an aspect of deer horns ( Fig. 37 View FIGURES 28–38. 28–29 ). Pseudoparenchymatous organization, with an abrupt transition between medulla and cortex ( Fig. 38 View FIGURES 28–38. 28–29 ). Medulla with 10–12 layers of semi-rounded cells, 30–48 μm x 50–120 μm in diameter. Subcortex with 1–2 layers of rounded cells, 15–20 μm in diameter. Cortex with two layers of elongated cells, anticlinal, very pigmented, 8–14 μm in diameter.
