Acanthophora spicifera (M.Vahl) Børgesen

Thallus mucilaginous, red or pink, 8–12 cm long, with cylindrical axes in cross section, 340–460 μm in diameter. Main axes branching laterally or pseudo-dichotomously; branches covered with small spine-like spirals, 0.5–1.5 mm in length ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 6–16. 6 ). Polysiphonous organization, with 5 rounded pericentral cells, 40–70 μm diameter, arising from a central spherical axial cell (50 μm in diameter). Medulla with several layers of cells, 40–90 μm in diameter, surrounding the pericentral cells. Cortex with one layer of large small cells, 10–16 μm in diameter ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 6–16. 6 ).
