Saxicola syenitica
status

Why the syenitica type is not a male Oenanthe picata opistholeuca

The syenitica type has shorter, more rounded wings and a shorter primary projection than warriae, and in these characters is closer to opistholeuca than warriae. For example, some O. picata sensu lato can have p2=6, and p1 can be 3 mm> primary-coverts, while c. 50% have no or only very insignificant emargination on p6 (thus being very close to the syenitica type). Nevertheless, the type of syenitica is readily separated from opistholeuca by its well-defined white fringes to the inner webs of the remiges, as in Middle Eastern and North African taxa of the lugens complex. Moreover, the identity of the syenitica type with lugens has been confirmed by DNA analysis, thereby comprehensively rejecting the idea that it might be related to O. picata .
