Type material. Holotype: male, Kazakhstan, Prov. Almaty, Zailiskiy Alatau, 1700 m, 15 km S of Issyk, Issyk Lake, N43º14', E077º28', 30.v.2006, leg. Balázs Benedek. Slide AV1121 Volynkin (Coll. BBT). Paratypes: 1 male, 2 females, same data as holotype (Coll. BBT); 2 males, Kazakhstan, Prov. Almaty, Elsyn-Buryik mt, 12 km SE of Karasaz, near Tuz Kol, 2100 m, N43º00', E079º56', 29.v.2006, leg. Balázs Benedek (Coll. BBT).

Diagnosis. The new subspecies is close to M. lama lama ( Figs 1–3 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ), but differs externally in the dark brown colouration of the body, much darker and more concolorous brown ground colour of the forewings with darker subbasal and subterminal areas, and the somewhat darker hindwings ( Figs 4–6 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ). The females of the new subspecies are smaller and have somewhat shorter and broader forewings than females of M. lama lama .

Description. External morphology ( Figs 4–6 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ). Wingspan 35–37 mm. Head, thorax and abdomen dark brown. Ground colour of forewing dark brown. Crosslines thin, double. Submarginal line pale, whitish ochreous, thin, strongly dentate. Marginal line present as a series of black wedge-like dots between the veins. Basal dash short, thin, black. Claviform short, dark brown, with thin black border; medial fascia thin, black. Medial area strongly shadowed around claviform and between reniform and orbicular stigmata. Terminal area dark brown. Cilia dark brown. Hindwing brown, discal spot diffuse, semilunar. Cilia greyish brown. Male genitalia ( Figs 53, 54 View FIGURES 51 – 56 ): very close to those of the nominotypical subspecies ( Figs 51, 52 View FIGURES 51 – 56 ) and differ only in the more angular cucullus and more dentate ventral margin of the digitus. Female genitalia ( Fig. 98 View FIGURES 97 – 104 ): differ from those of M. lama lama ( Fig. 97 View FIGURES 97 – 104 ) in the shorter apophyses anteriores, broader antrum, broader and more curved ductus bursae and smaller conical projection of the corpus bursae.

Distribution. Central Asian. Northeast Tien Shan massif (Southeast Kazakhstan).

Etymology. Kortka is a female character in the great Kazakh people's epic "Koblandy-batyr".
