Liriomyza smilacinae Spencer View in CoL
( Fig. 152 View FIGURES 144–153 )
Material examined. MAINE: Hancock Co., Castine, Rene Henderson Preserve, 21.vi.2014, em. 4.vii.2014, C.S. Eiseman, ex Maianthemum canadense , #CSE1151, CNC384888 View Materials , CNC384889 View Materials (1♂ 1♀) ; MASSACHUSETTS: Plymouth Co. , West Bridgewater, 42.007887, -71.048684, 7.viii.2013, em. 12.iii.2014, C.S. Eiseman, ex Maianthemum canadense , #CSE1002, CNC384731 View Materials (1♂) .
Host. Asparagaceae : Maianthemum canadense Desf. , M. stellatum (L.) Link, M. trifolium (L.) Sloboda, “ False Solomon’s Seal ” (= M. racemosum (L.) Link?) ( Spencer 1969; Lonsdale 2017).
Leaf mine. ( Fig. 152 View FIGURES 144–153 ) Whitish, upper surface, entirely linear; frass in a nearly continuous black line. The mines from which we reared these specimens were contorted at the beginning, forming an elongate spiral.
Puparium. Orange; formed outside the mine.
Distribution. USA: CA, *MA, *ME; Canada: AB, MB, NB, NS, ON, QC.
Comments. The type series was reared from larvae collected in Alberta and Manitoba on June 16, June 29, and July 15. Our rearing records indicate this species is at least bivoltine in New England, with larvae occurring in June and early August. A larva collected in early July proved to be another species ( Liriomyza sp. 1, below). The only Liriomyza mines we have found on Maianthemum racemosum were already empty at the end of May.
