, 58.1). E. dentatus View in CoL is the next most basal taxon and the sister group to a monophyletic clade de ned by two apomorphies, # 50.1, 52.0. This large clade comprises three lineages: the E. tunetanus species-complex ( tunetanus ) de ned by apomorphies, # 1.1, 3.0, 5.1, 7.2, 8.2, 11.2, 41.1, 42.2, 43.1; the E. frigidus species-complex ( albitarsus , albomarginatus , digitalis , frigidus , medialis , ruber , thoracicus ) de ned by three apomorphies, # 33.3, 34.2, 35.2; and the E. clypealis species-complex ( clypealis , kiushuensis , latitarsus , pectinis , pruinosus , rufocinctus , schizophrenus , sensibus , serricornis ) de ned by three apomorphies, # 25.3, 27.2, 36.1).
robust hierarchical pattern is retained in the consensus tree (gure 2). Although have not included them in the analysis, we have examined all other Nearctic species and they nest within the frigidus species-group as they possess the de ning apomorphies of this clade.
