Pythochandra borneensis ( Baker) View in CoL , stat. n., comb. n.
( Figs 1 View FIGURE 1 B, 2A–I, 3A–D)
Pythamus melichari View in CoL var. Borneensis Baker, 1923 View in CoL : 368; pl. 1, fig. 1b; pl. 2, fig. 15.
Body length: male 6.3–6.5mm; female: 6.9–7.3 mm.
Head ( Figs 1 View FIGURE 1 B, 2A, B) with vertex nearly entirely dark brown except subapical narrow band and spot next to eyes, yellow; face ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 C) yellow except gena with narrow dark brown band next to eye and postclypeus variably marked with dark brown dorsally ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 B). Pronotum ( Figs 2 View FIGURE 2 A, B) dark brown dorsally and laterally to beyond lateral carina. Forewing ( Figs 1 View FIGURE 1 B, 2D) dark brown with narrow hyaline band on basal two-thirds of costal margin.
Male pygofer process ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 E) with several mainly truncate teeth over distal half. Style ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 G, H) with lateral apical process relatively long. Aedeagus ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 F, G, H) with ventral keel arising near base with lower margin concave, relatively broad in lateral view, thereafter shaft laterally compressed with apex tubular and incised in dorsal view with small ventral subapical medial process.
Material examined. Lectotype ♂ (here designated, Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 B), 1♂, 2♀♀ paralectotypes: Sabah, “Sandakan, Borneo, Baker ” ( NMNH). 1♀, Sabah, Sandakan, 30-vii-1927, ex. F.M.S., B.M. 1955-354; 1♀, Sarawak, foot of Mt. Dulit, Junction of Rivers Tinjar & Lejok, 2-ix-1932, Oxford Univ. exp., light trap, B.M. Hobby & A.W. Moore, B.M. 1933-254 (both BMNH). 1 ♂, Sarawak, Bidi, 3.ix.1958, secondary forest, T.C. Maa ( BPBM)
Distribution. Sarawak, Sabah.
Remarks. This species was originally described from an unknown number of specimens from ‘Borneo, Sandakan ( Baker). It can be distinguished from other species of the genus by the more extensive dark brown markings and shape of the male genitalia (see above). Its distribution overlaps with P. bilobatus in Sandakan.
Pythochandra melichari ( Baker) , comb. n. ( Figs 1 View FIGURE 1 C, 4A–M)
Pythamus melichari Baker, 1915: 198 View in CoL ; fig. 4 Body length: male 5.5–5.7mm; female: 6.3 mm.
Vertex ( Figs 1 View FIGURE 1 C, 4A, B) with spot at tip and at posterior corner and a transverse band medially not extending to posterior margin but sometimes extending to spot at posterior corner, dark brown; frontoclypeus ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 C) with dark brown spot next to antennal socket. Pronotum ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 A, B) dark brown with lateral margin yellow. Forewing dark brown on clavus and adjacent area of corium.
Male pygofer process ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 H) with few acute teeth subapically. Aedeagus ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 I, J. L) with ventral keel at mid length of shaft, relatively narrow in lateral view, thereafter shaft tubular without processes.
Material examined. Lectotype ♂ (here designated, Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 C), 1 ♂, 1♀ paralectotypes: Philippines, “P. [Puerto] Princesa, Palawan, Baker ” ( NMNH). 1♀, Philippines, Laguna, Los Banos, x–xi.1915, F. Muir ( BPBM).
Distribution. Philippines: Palawan Island and Laguna.
Remarks. This species was originally described from an unknown number of specimens from “ Philippines ”. It can be distinguished from other species of the genus by the vertex with central dark brown band slightly reduced in size and by the shape of ventral process of the pygofer and shape of the aedeagus.
