Emended diagnosis: The filaments are very short consisting of 2–10cells or 2-dimensional cell packages embedded in common mucilage. Branching is rudimentary. Vegetative cells are cylindrical, often curved, and uninucleate, with a parietal chloroplast containing one pyrenoid surrounded by starch grains. Reproduction occurs by vegetative division, and biflagellated zoospores possess a stigma and two contractile vacuoles.
