10. Rhynchortalia anupama sp. n.
( Figs. 9 View FIGURES 1–12 , 28 View FIGURES 18–29 , 65–67 View FIGURES 57–76 )
Diagnosis: This species can be distinguished from the other Rhynchortalia species by its characteristic pronotum being strongly narrowed posteriorly. The male genitalia ( Figs. 65–67 View FIGURES 57–76 ) are diagnostic.
Description: Male: Length: 4.0 mm; width: 2.0 mm. Form ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 1–12 ) elongate oval, moderately convex. Head and pronotum yellow, elytra dark iridescent bluish violet with yellowish apices; antenna, mouthparts, prosternum, pro- and mesothoracic legs and abdominal ventrites 2–6 yellow, meso– and metaventrites, metacoxae and femora (except apices) dark reddish brown, metatibiae dusky brown, abdominal ventrites 1 and 2 slightly darker, reddish brown, postcoxal lines dark reddish brown.
Head shallowly punctate, especially in posterior half, punctation obsolete towards anterior / clypeal margin, interspaces smooth, shiny. Eyes large, elongate, margin obtusely broadly emarginate below antennal insertion. Pronotum somewhat cordate, broad anteriorly and distinctly narrowed towards posterior margin, lateral margins strongly rounded and deeply grooved; punctures fine anteriorly, posterior half more densely punctate, sides and anterolateral corners with distinctly larger, more closely spaced punctures, interspaces distinctly reticulate. Elytra laterally carinate, with distinct dual punctures, large punctures equal on disc and lateral sides, appearing deep and crater–like at high magnification, separated by <1–4 diameters on disc, finer punctures separated by 1–3 diameters on interstices; large punctures more closely spaced laterally, interspaces shiny, coarse punctures finer towards apices. Pronotal hypomeral shelf well-developed, not projecting beyond pronotum anteriorly, lobe–like or somewhat triangular with a deep depression near posterolateral edge. Abdominal postcoxal lines shallow. Posterior margin of ventrite 5 ( Fig. 28 View FIGURES 18–29 ) shallowly emarginate, ventrite 6 deeply emarginate with a parabolic notch. Male genitalia ( Figs. 65–67 View FIGURES 57–76 ) with penis guide ( Fig. 65 View FIGURES 57–76 ) short, cylindrical, apical 1/3 narrowed in ventral view; penis ( Fig. 66, 67 View FIGURES 57–76 ) as illustrated.
Specimen Examined: Holotype, male: New Guinea: Papua , Owen Stanley Range , Goilala, Tapini, 975m, XI.16–25.1957/ W.W. Brandt ( BPBM).
Etymology: The specific epithet, a Sanskrit adjective, translates as ‘incomparable’, referring to the unique shape of the pronotum.
Distribution: Papua New Guinea.
