Diagnosis. Similar to Callaspidia aberrans since both have weak transverse carinae on scutum; but lateral surface of pronotum is coriaceous with a few transverse carinae basally; dorsally coriaceous, sometimes slightly rugose, rarely with weak carinae in C. notata while in C. aberrans the lateral surface of pronotum is strongly rugose and weakly to strongly coriaceous.

Redescription. Length. Male 2.6 to 4.2 mm.; Female 2.6 to 4.6 mm.

Coloration. Head black, except for the light brown mandibulae. Antenna light brown, scape and pedicel slightly lighter. Leg orange. Mesosoma black, basally orange. Scutellum and mesopleura mostly orange with some darker areas. Metasoma black with some orange reflections. This is the type coloration, but this species is very variable, so it is possible to find specimens ranging from black with some light brown areas to light brown specimens with some darker areas.

Head. Frons rugose, weakly alutaceous, sometimes with transverse carinae in dorsal ½, frontal carina blunt. Lateral frontal carina conspicuous, sometimes slightly sinuous, space between it and compound eye with some faint transverse carinae. Vertex, in dorsal view, with two large cells weakly rugose inside. Gena in lateral view rounded behind the compound eye, almost smooth, shining and with noticeable transverse carinae. Occiput shining and with clear transverse carinae.

Mesosoma. Lateral surface of pronotum coriaceous with a few transverse carinae basally; dorsally coriaceous, sometimes slightly rugose, rarely with weak carinae. Scutum in dorsal view coriaceous, with weak transverse carinae, stronger between notauli. Parascutal sulcus mostly smooth, sometimes weakly carinated posteriorly. Notauli and median mesoscutal furrow strongly to weakly carinated transversely. Median ridge and antero-admedial lines conspicuous. Mesosoma in lateral view almost straight, without any strong protuberance. Mesopleura smooth and slightly alutaceous anteriorly. Median scutellar carina usually noticeable when scutellum seen in lateral view. Propodeal carinae straight, sometimes slightly divergent, wider basally than apically. Central area of propodeum pubescent, without transverse carinae.

Wings. R2 almost straight, usually reaching the alar margin. R1 absent.

Biology. Unknown.

Distribution. Palaearctic and Oriental. Known from France, Tunisia, Spain, Croatia and Morocco ( Dalla Torre & Kieffer, 1910), from Tunisia ( Hedicke, 1928), Spain ( Tavares, 1924), India ( Hedicke, 1913) Germany (cited by Reinhard, according to notes from Kieffer, 1902: 186) and Portugal (Madeira, Graham, 1986); also from Algeria, Andorra, China, Cyprus, Greece, Israel, Italy, Japan, Nepal, Tunisia and Turkey new cites in this study.

Comments. Reinhard (1860: 237) described Onychia notata , but the genus Onychia was pre-occupied by Hübner (1916) as a lepidopteran genus. Dalla Torre & Kieffer (1910: 64) transferred Reinhard’s species to Callaspidia as C. mediterranea , a new name for Onychia notata . This modification is unjustified since, at the time, the name ‘ notata ’ was not pre-occupied by Boyer de Fonscolombe because Figites notata Boyer de Fonscolombe was transferred to the genus Tavaresia in Kieffer (1901a) and this was retained by Dalla Torre & Kieffer (1910: 69) until Graham (1986) transferred Figites notata Boyer de Fonscolombe, 1832 , to the genus Callaspidia . In conclusion, Callaspidia mediterranea Dalla Torre & Kieffer , collected from Spain, France and Croatia, belongs to Onychia notata Reinhard (not Figites notata Boyer de Fonscolombe ) after Graham’s (1968) conclusions. The original description is very short but the sculptural characters mentioned in the redescription of Kieffer (1902: 284) suggest that this species belongs to C. notata (Boyer de Fonscolombe) because the lateral face of the pronotum is not transversely carinated and the scutum has dorsally weak transverse carinae. For these reasons, we consider Callaspidia mediterranea Dalla Torre & Kieffer, 1910 [= Callaspidia notata (Reinhard, 1860) ] as a new synonymy of C. notata ( Boyer de Fonscolombe, 1832) .

Even if the type material of C. binghami seems to be different from C. ligurica and C. notata material (this is only because these specimens are very light brown, and the sculpture is very difficult to observe) we consider Callaspidia binghami a new synonymy of C. notata ( Boyer de Fonscolombe, 1832) .

Deposited in (MNHN-Paris) there are three specimens of Callaspidia ligurica Giraud belonging to Giraud's collection. In the original description ( Giraud, 1860: 40) the author mentions that this new species is described from a single female collected by Mr. De Baran near Nice. One of the specimens carries an illegible inscription in Giraud's handwriting, and it is fixed with a minuten. Giraud, as a matter of habit, labelled the first specimen; besides, in the great majority of his collection the individuals are mounted on minuten. For all these reasons, we consider this specimen the holotype of Callaspidia ligurica Giraud , and consider that the other two specimens were incorporated to Giraud's collection at a date subsequent to the description of the species and therefore belong to the additional studied material.

Dahlbom, (1842:13) considers Figites notata Boyer de Fonscolombe, 1832 as a synonym of C. defonscolombei . However, after examining the types of both species we conclude that they are two different and valid species.

The type material of Callaspidia dusmeti Tavares, 1924 has been destroyed. Tavares (1924) mentions that C. dusmeti is a species close to C. dufouri Giraud , which is synonymous to C. defonscolombei Dahlbom from Hellén (1958). The lateral sculpture of the pronotum, coriaceous in C. dusmeti , as indicated in the original description, is only present in Callaspidia notata . This characteristic and others detailed in the description of C. dusmeti allow us to assert that C. dusmeti should be considered as a new synonymy of C. notata .
