Distribution. East Pacific: Ecuador (Galápagos); single record from Panama (Bahía Honda in Veraguas) highly doubtful ( Haig 1960; see below).

Ecology. Intertidal and subtidal, known depth range: 0–20 m; under rocks, on sandy bottoms and associated with corals ( Haig 1960; Hickman & Zimmerman 2000).

Remarks. With the exception of three specimens collected in Bahía Honda, Panama, P. brachycarpus is known only from the Galápagos Archipelago ( Haig 1960). Haig (1960) considered the material of P. brachycarpus from Bahía Honda as “extralimital”, probably due either to an accidental introduction or (perhaps more likely) to an error in the label accompanying these specimens. Therefore, the presence of this species in Panama requires confirmation.
