Diagnosis. Aethes semicircularis can be easily distinguished from its congeners by the semicircularly dilated anterior part of each arm of the vinculum and the C-shaped phallus in the male genitalia; and by the corpus bursae with a weakly sclerotized accessory sac in the female genitalia. Aethes semicircularis is similar to A. amurensis Razowski, 1964 , but the former can be distinguished by the valva gradually narrowed from the base to the apex in the male genitalia, and the antrum concave on the posterior margin in the female genitalia. In A. amurensis , the valva is nearly parallel-sided in the basal 3/5 and gradually narrowed in the distal 2/ 5 in the male genitalia, and the antrum is straight on the posterior margin in the female genitalia.

Description. Adult ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 2 − 5 ). Wingspan 11.0−15.0 mm. Head: Vertex and frons yellowish white. Antenna yellowish brown. Labial palpus slender, length about twice the diameter of the compound eye, yellowish white, mixed sparsely with pale yellowish brown on outer surface. Thorax: Dorsum and tegula yellowish brown, mixed with yellow. Forewing with costal margin slightly arched, termen slightly oblique; ground color yellowish white; costal margin irregularly sprinkled with small brownish black spots or strigulae; basal patch occupied basal 1/4 of forewing, pale yellow except brownish black along costal margin; median fascia extending from middle of costal margin obliquely outward, interrupted at anterior 1/3, then extending obliquely inward to basal 2/5 of dorsum, pale yellowish brown on anterior 1/3, brownish black mixed with yellowish brown on posterior 2/3; subapical fascia extending from distal 1/4 of costal margin to tornus, pale yellowish brown, with a pale yellowish brown spot adjacent to posterior half of its inner margin; subtornal spot small, brownish black mixed with yellowish brown, situated at distal 2/5 of dorsum; dorsum with an irregular pale yellowish brown spot from between median fascia and subtornal spot reaching anteriorly about midwidth of forewing; apex and termen with small brownish black spots; cilia yellowish white, sparsely mixed with pale yellowish brown. Hindwing and cilia grayish brown. Fore- and midlegs brownish black mixed with yellowish brown, tarsal segments with yellow rings; hindleg yellowish white. Abdomen: Brownish black.

Male genitalia ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 6 − 9 ). Valva gradually narrowed from broad base to narrowly rounded apex; costa narrowly sclerotized to apex of valva; transtilla uniformly broad band-shaped, median process about 1/2 length of transtilla, slightly narrowed to shallowly concave apex. Sacculus about 1/2 length of costa, heavily sclerotized basally, protruding dorso-basally. Vinculum weakly sclerotized, each arm semicircularly dilated anteriorly. Juxta ovoid. Phallus stout, curved, C-shaped in lateral view, about equal in length to valva, distal 1/3 gradually narrowed to pointed apex; cornutus a thick spine about 1/2 length of phallus.

Female genitalia ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 10 − 11 ). Papilla analis slender, about four times as long as wide, slightly shorter than apophysis posterioris. Apophysis posterioris about equal in length to apophysis anterioris. Sterigma weakly sclerotized, somewhat narrow, nearly V-shaped. Antrum nearly cylindrical, length about 2/3 of its width, slightly concave on posterior margin; ductus bursae very short, not differentiated from corpus bursae, with longitudinal wrinkles; ductus seminalis arising from anterior part of ductus bursae. Corpus bursae elongate ovoid, with a weakly sclerotized accessory sac, anterior 2/5 wrinkled, posterior 3/5 weakly sclerotized with longitudinal wrinkles and tiny spines.

Distribution. China (Henan, Jilin, Ningxia, Shaanxi, Shanxi).

Etymology. The specific name is derived from the Latin semicircularis , referring to the semicircular anterior part of the vinculum.

Diagnosis. Aethes subcitreoflava is morphologically similar to A. citreoflava Kuznetzov, 1966 , but A. subcitreoflava can be distinguished by the phallus with the distal 1/4 slightly narrowed to a rounded apex in the male genitalia; and by the antrum cylindrical in the female genitalia. In A. citreoflava , the distal 1/4 of the phallus is abruptly narrowed to a pointed apex in the male genitalia (Razowski 1970: pl. 81, fig. 190); and the antrum is roughly U-shaped in the female genitalia (Razowski 1970: pl. 144, fig. 190).

Description. Adult ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 2 − 5 ). Wingspan 8.0−20.0 mm. Head: Vertex and frons pale yellow. Antenna pale yellowish brown. Labial palpus length about 2.5 times diameter of compound eye, yellow mixed with pale yellowish brown on outer surface, pale yellowish white on inner surface; second segment dilated distally, third segment short and small, often concealed in the scaling of the second. Thorax: Dorsum and tegula yellowish brown, mixed with brown. Forewing with costal margin slightly arched, termen oblique; ground color yellow, finely reticulated with yellowish brown throughout, costal margin irregularly spaced with small yellowish brown spots; basal patch occupying basal 1/7 of forewing, yellowish brown mixed with brown; median fascia extending from middle of costal margin obliquely inward to basal 1/3 of dorsum, interrupted at anterior 1/3, brown mixed with brownish black except pale yellowish brown on anterior 1/3, posterior 2/3 about half width of anterior 1/3, sinuate along lateral margins; subtornal spot a short stripe, situated at distal 1/4 of dorsum, parallel to and about 2/ 5 length of median fascia, yellowish brown except brownish black on dorsum; cilia yellow, with sparse yellowish brown scales. Hindwing gray; cilia grayish white, mixed with gray at base forming a gray line. Fore- and midlegs brownish black, tarsal segments with yellow rings; hindleg yellowish white, sparsely mixed with brownish black scales. Abdomen: Brownish black.

Male genitalia ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 6 − 9 ). Valva broadest at base, slightly narrowed to rounded apex; sclerotization of costa somewhat broad, almost reaching apex; transtilla a broad uniform lateral band, median process gradually narrowed from base to rounded apex, about 1/2 length of transtilla, about equal in length to width of transtilla at base. Sacculus weakly sclerotized, about 1/2 length of costa, ventral margin roundly convex. Vinculum slender. Juxta ovoid, posterior margin slightly concave at middle. Phallus deeply concave inward ventromedially, more or less Cshaped in lateral view, about as long as valva, distal 1/4 slightly narrowed to rounded apex; a sclerotized plate surrounding median 1/3 of phallus; cornutus a slender spine about 1/3 length of phallus.

Female genitalia ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 10 − 11 ). Papilla analis somewhat short, about four times as long as wide, slightly shorter than apophysis posterioris. Apophysis posterioris slightly shorter than apophysis anterioris. Sterigma small, weakly sclerotized. Antrum cylindrical, length about 2/3 its width, weakly sclerotized; ductus bursae about as long as antrum, membranous, with longitudinal wrinkles; ductus seminalis arising from anterior part of ductus bursae. Corpus bursae elongate ovoid, posterior half partly covered with dense tiny spines, partly with longitudinal wrinkles, a small area with tiny spines anterior to longitudinal wrinkles.

Distribution. China (Gansu, Inner Mongolia, Jilin, Shanxi).

Etymology. The specific name is derived from the Latin prefix sub -, and the name of the previous known species citreoflava , reflecting the similarity of the two species.
