Subgenus Stenichnus View in CoL s. str.
Scydmaenus of Thomson, 1859: 61 (misidentified; not Latreille, 1802). Type species: Scydmaenus godarti Latreille, 1806 (designated by Thomson, 1859: 61; designation invalid, species not originally included).
Cyrtoscydmus Motschulsky, 1870: 260 . Type species: Scydmaenus collaris Müller & Kunze, 1822 (des. Franz in Newton & Franz (1998)). Placed as junior synonym of Stenichnus by Meybohm (2004).
Leptoderoides Croissandeau, 1898: 404 (as subgenus of Cyrtoscydmus ). Type species: Scydmaenus leptoderus Reitter, 1881 (des. Franz in Newton & Franz (1998)). Placed as junior synonym of Cyrtoscydmus by Csiki (1919).
Pseudoleptocharis Croissandeau, 1898: 407 (as subgenus of Cyrtoscydmus ). Type species: Scydmaenus ellipticus Reitter, 1884 (monotypy). Placed as junior synonym of Stenichnus s. str. by Csiki (1919).
About 180 representatives of the nominotypical subgenus of Stenichnus are distributed in the northern hemisphere, mostly in the Palaearctic Region (Davies 2004; Jałoszyński 2004, 2006, 2009; Jałoszyński & Arai 2009; Newton & Franz 1998). Some species were reported to occur in the Neotropics (e.g., Franz 1980), but their taxonomic status requires verification (Jałoszyński, unpublished observations). Although some regional taxonomic surveys have been published (e.g., western Mediterranean (Franz 1960, 1961), Japan and Taiwan (Jałoszyński 2004)), still a remarkable number of new species accumulated in various museums awaits description and many species described by older authors require revision (Jałoszyński, unpublished observations).
