Holotype

Female, length of body 4.1 mm, length of forewing 3.3 mm.

Head

Antenna with 25 segments and segments just after middle of antenna as long as wide, scapus rather coarsely punctate ventrally, third segment as long as fourth segment, third, fourth and penultimate segments 3.1, 3.1 and 1.3 times their maximum width, respectively; length of maxillary palp 0.5 times height of head; median length of face (up to level of antennal sockets) 0.5 times its minimum width; head in dorsal view 2.1 times wider than long (medially or at level of eyes); face weakly convex, coarsely punctate but dorsally irregularly punctate-rugose; clypeus twice wider than high, ventrally hardly surpassing upper level of upper condyli of mandibles ( Figure 3F View Figure 3 ), angulate laterally and medially with small tooth, its surface rather coarsely punctate, with narrow to medium-sized smooth interspaces and ventrally with some transverse striae; area between antennal sockets with a strong lamella, connected to a complete median carina of frons ( Figure 3F View Figure 3 ); frons distinctly concave and largely smooth medially, anterior ocellus slightly lower situated than lateral ocelli, laterally convex and coarsely reticulate-punctate; vertex coarsely punctate; stemmaticum sparsely punctate; ocellar–ocular distance (OOL): diameter of posterior ocellus: distance between posterior ocelli (POL) 12: 4: 7; in dorsal view length of eye equal to length of temple; temples gradually narrowed behind eyes and coarsely punctate; occipital carina complete, medium-sized and dorsally slightly arched; length of malar space 1.2 times basal width of mandible and 0.4 times height of eye; occipital flange 0.6 times as long as malar space.

Mesosoma

Length of mesosoma 1.2 times its height; side of pronotum finely punctate dorsally, medially crenulate, posteriorly very coarsely punctate and ventrally largely smooth; propleuron flattened and microsculptured; laterally mesoscutum partly reticulatepunctate; mesosternum flattened, smooth, but with a sublateral carina connected to carina below precoxal sulcus and enclosing a subtriangular area; mesosternal sulcus rather wide and largely smooth; mesopleuron largely moderately punctate, but precoxal sulcus nearly complete and very coarsely punctate and bordered anteriorly and ventrally by a carina; metapleuron very coarsely reticulate and with conspicuous long greyish setae; lateral lobes of mesoscutum punctate and middle lobe rather coarsely and densely punctate, and with a weak median ridge anteriorly; notauli deep, coarsely punctate-crenulate; scutellar sulcus smooth except for a strong median carina; scutellum weakly convex and rather sparsely but coarsely punctate, and with carina laterally; side of scutellum coarsely crenulate; dorsal face of propodeum very short (about as long as metanotum) and coarsely reticulate, with short median carina connected to a coarse arched transverse carina, posterior face nearly perpendicular to dorsal face and largely smooth (only punctate laterally), with a pair of rather large blunt teeth laterally.

Wings

Forewing ( Figure 3A View Figure 3 ). r: 3-SR+SR1: 2-SR 5: 30: 10; 1-R1 0.9 times as long as pterostigma and 1.3 times distance from it to apex of wing; 2-R1 0.3 times vein 1-R1; cu-a inclivous; 1-CU1: 2-CU1 1: 10; 1-M straight; basal half of wing distinctly less densely setose than apical half of wing.

Hind wing. cu-a slightly reclivous and surrounding area sparsely setose; M+CU: 1- M: 1r-m 23: 24: 8; marginal cell strongly narrowed apically.

Legs

Hind coxa largely finely punctulate and anterodorsally with some coarse oblique striae; tarsal claws angled and with large acute lobe; hind femur widened ( Figure 3C View Figure 3 ); lengths of femur, tibia and basitarsus of hind leg 2.9, 5.7 and 3.0 times their maximum width, respectively; hind tibial spurs 0.5 and 0.8 times as long as hind basitarsus; second to fourth segments of fore tarsus slender compared to robust segments of hind tarsus.

Metasoma

Carapace coarsely longitudinally rugose-reticulate, ovoid and strongly convex, 1.4 times as long as its maximum width in dorsal view, slightly narrowed posteriorly ( Figure 3I View Figure 3 ); carapace distinctly transversely emarginate medioapically, with lamella distinctly protruding and narrow anteriorly ( Figure 3J View Figure 3 ); first and second sutures present but dorsally shallowly impressed; in lateral view carapace 1.8 times longer than its maximum height and apically subtruncate ( Figure 3G View Figure 3 ); ovipositor sheath 0.50 times as long as forewing, 1.4 times hind tibia (but part protruding beyond apex of metasoma about equal to it) and 0.95 times metasoma.

Colour

Black; palpi, base of fore and middle tibiae narrowly and basal quarter of hind tibia pale yellowish; antenna, clypeus ventrally, tegulae, remainder of legs, carapace slightly laterally, parastigma, pterostigma and veins largely dark brown; apical half of forewing distinctly infuscate and remainder subhyaline.

Variation

Length of forewing 3.2–3.5 mm, and of body 4.1–4.5 mm; antenna of female with 25 (1) or 26 (3) segments; length of ovipositor sheath 0.50–0.58 times forewing and 0.9–1.1 times as long as metasoma.

Biology

Endoparasitoids of coleopterous larvae in seeds of Dipterocarpaceae ( Shorea acuminata Dyer ). Emergence from later aborted seeds ( Figure 1A View Figure 1 ) suggests that Schizoprymnus mesocaudus is probably parasitoid on larvae of Alcidodes dipterocarpi and/or Alcidodes humeralis ( Coleoptera : Apionidae ).

Distribution

West Malaysia.

Notes

Runs in the key by Papp (1993) to Schizoprymnus aramus Papp, 1993 , from East Malaysia (Sabah); both share the widened hind tibia. However, the new species has vein 2-R1 of the forewing 0.3 times as long as vein 1-R1 (0.5 times in S. aramus ), the ovipositor sheath 1.4 times as long as the hind tibia (nearly twice as long in S. aramus ), basal half of the forewing subhyaline (more or less infuscate in S. aramus ), the incision of the third metasomal tergite of female medium-sized and transverse, and its lamella narrow anteriorly and apically acutely protruding (small circular incision with lamella wide anteriorly and not protruding apically in S. aramus ) and posterior half of the metasoma less elongate and less tapering apically in dorsal view (more elongate and tapering apically in S. aramus ).

Material examined

Holotype female, ‘‘W. Malaysia, N. Sembilan Pasoh Forest Reserve , 25 January 2002. From Shorea acuminata seeds, Y.F. Ng and Hosaka’ ’, ‘‘B 31’’, ‘‘Collected (223861)’’, ‘‘ Centre for Insect Systematics, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’ ’ ( UKM) . Paratypes (four females): one female, id., but 26 August 2002, B 30 and collection no. 465018 ( RMNH) ; one female, id., but 10 October 2002, B 27 and 324995 ( RMNH) ; one female, id., but 25 February 2002, C 47 and collection no. 195690 ( RMNH) ; one female, id., but 2 September 2002, C 52 and collection no. 403875( UKM) .
