scientific name

Pyragrura Rondani, 1861e: 87
status

479. Pyragrura Rondani, 1861e: 87 , 90.

ORIGINALLY INCLUDED SPECIES: Pyragrura uncinatus Rondani, 1861 .

TYPE SPECIES: Pyragrura uncinatus Rondani, 1861 [= Tachina forcipata Meigen, 1824 ], by monotypy.

CURRENT STATUS: Junior synonym of Labigastera Macquart, 1834 . New synonymy.

FAMILY: TACHINIDAE .

REMARKS: Pyragrura Rondani (1861e) was thought to be originally proposed without included species and was thus treated as a nomen nudum or nomen dubium [e.g., Herting & Dely-Draskovits (1993: 437)]. However, the footnote in Rondani (1861e: 90) explicitly includes a single named species and assigns this to a new genus: “ Sp: hoc nomine distincta a Macquartio diversa a Meigeniana, praesertim. vena transversa exteriore aequidistante ab anteriori, et a cubito quintae longitudinalis , quae in forcipata satis distat ab interiore: ideo nomine distincto vocanda Uncinatus Mihi. Si vero certe oculos hirtos et setas discoidales praebet, Generi meo Pyragrura pertinet ”. [Sp: If the species identified by Macquart (i.e., forcipata Meigen sensu Macquart ) is distinct from Meigeniana (i.e., forcipata Meigen ) as follows: vena transversa exteriore aequidistante ab anteriori, et a cubito quintae longitudinalis, quae in forcipata satis distat ab interiore: then it needs a distinct name Uncinatus. If it were true that the eyes are pubescent and it has discal bristles, then it should be attributed to my genus Pyragrura .]
