478. Ptylops Rondani, 1859b: 85 .
ORIGINALLY INCLUDED SPECIES: Macquartia celebs Rondani, 1859 .
TYPE SPECIES: Macquartia celebs Rondani, 1859 , by monotypy .
CURRENT STATUS: Junior synonym of Macquartia Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 . New synonymy.
FAMILY: TACHINIDAE .
REMARKS: Rondani (1859b: 85), in a footnote to Macquartia celebs Rondani, 1859 , proposed this genusgroup name for “ Macquartia ” of authors. Sabrosky (1999: 263) pointed out the nomenclatural complexity of Ptylops Rondani, 1859 and Ptilops Rondani, 1857 . If Ptylops Rondani, 1859 were treated as an alternate spelling of Ptilops Rondani, 1857 (either as an incorrect subsequent spelling or unjustified emendation), then the type species of Ptilops would be Macquartia celebs Rondani, 1859 by subsequent monotypy. Herting (1984: 192) treated Ptylops Rondani, 1859 as a “variant spelling” of Ptilops Rondani, 1857 but did not recognize Macquartia celebs as the type species of Ptilops . Instead, Herting (1984: 158) listed Ptilocera adolescens Rondani, 1862 as the type species of Ptilops Rondani, 1857 by subsequent designation of Townsend (1916: 8). This is the same type species designation that we accept, even though we interpret Ptilops Rondani, 1857 and Ptylops Rondani, 1859 as nomenclaturally and taxonomically different. Rondani (1862d: 165–167) did not include Macquartia celebs in Ptilops so we follow Sabrosky (1999: 263) in interpreting Ptylops Rondani, 1859 (with type species M. celebs ) as a separately proposed genus-group name. Currently, Ptilops Rondani is treated as a junior synonym of Dufouria Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 .
