TYPE SPECIES: Ptilocera palpalis Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 [= Zeuxia cinerea Meigen, 1826 ], automatic [by designation of the same species (by subsequent designation of Townsend, 1916: 8) for Ptilocera Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 ].

CURRENT STATUS: Unnecessary new replacement name for Ptilocera Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 (as “ Ptilocera Mgn. ”); junior synonym of Zeuxia Meigen, 1826 . New synonymy.

FAMILY: TACHINIDAE .

REMARKS: Previous catalogers (e.g., Herting, 1993: 111) have placed Ptilocheta Rondani, 1857 as a junior synonym of Stevenia Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 in Rhinophoridae , but this is incorrect. Rondani’s (1857: 13) proposal of the new replacement name indicated “Mgn.” as the author of Ptilocera with reference to Rondani (1856: 87), but this is best explained as an error since Rondani got the authorship (Robineau-Desvoidy) correct in his 1856 work. Ptilocera Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 is currently treated as a junior synonym of Zeuxia Meigen, 1826 [ teste Herting & Dely-Draskovits (1993: 368) ], thus the new synonymy here of Ptilocheta Rondani, 1857 with Zeuxia Meigen, 1826 .
