scientific name

Opegiocera Rondani, 1845j: 152
status

382. Opegiocera Rondani, 1845j: 152 , 153.

ORIGINALLY INCLUDED SPECIES: Dasypogon humeralis Wiedemann, 1821 .

TYPE SPECIES: Dasypogon humeralis Wiedemann, 1821 , by monotypy .

CURRENT STATUS: Junior synonym of Ancylorhynchus Berthold, 1827 . New synonymy.

FAMILY: ASILIDAE .

REMARKS: Previous works have failed to indicate the type species for Opegiocera . The genus-group name was considered by Hull (1962: 216) and Lehr (1988: 326) as a nomen nudum ; however, this is incorrect. When Rondani described the nominal genus Opegiocera (1845j: 153) , he gave explicit characters to differentiate the nominal taxon as a new genus: “E tali diversità mi sembrano bastanti per costituire una differenza generica” [“and these differences seem to me enough to support a genus”], which is sufficient for availability (ICZN Code Article 12.1). Additionally, Rondani (1845j) transferred some species previously treated in Xyphocera to his two new genera: Elasmocera Rondani, 1845 and Opegiocera Rondani, 1845 . He explicitly included Xyphocera humeralis (Wiedemann, 1821) and only this in his new genus Opegiocera : “Le specie eli Dasipogon, Limbatus Fab , ed Humeralis Wied che il Macquart riporta alle sue Xifocere saranno od Elasmocere, od Opegiocere, ...” [“The species of Dasipogon, Limbatus Fab, and Humeralis Wied that Macquart ascribes to his Xifocera belong to Elasmocera and Opegiocera respectively, ...”]. Therefore the type species of Opegiocera is Dasypogon humeralis Wiedemann, 1821 , by monotypy. Dasypogon humeralis Wiedemann, 1821 is currently treated in Ancylorhynchus Berthold, 1827 [ teste Oldroyd (1980: 360) ], making Opegiocera Rondani, 1845 a junior synonym of Ancylorhynchus Berthold, 1827 , new synonymy. The synonymy established here is new since Rondani’s name was previously thought to be unavailable and unavailable names are not subject to nomenclatural legislation and cannot be synonyms.
