Rondani explicitly stated that the correct spelling is that published by Rondani (1840) (albeit misspelled as “ Ozirhyncus R. 1840”).

FAMILY: CECIDOMYIIDAE .

REMARKS: This spelling appeared first in Oken (1844: 450) and later in Loew (1845: 11), Agassiz (1846b: 268) and Bigot (1854: 461), each time as an incorrect subsequent spelling. Gagné (2004: 215) listed Oxyrhynchus of Loew (1845: 11) as an emendation, but a check of this work found only an incorrect subsequent spelling. This spelling in Rondani (1856) is either an incorrect subsequent spelling or unjustified emendation (by virtue of similar spelling changes in two or more names from “i” to “y” in the same work). We thus follow ICZN Code Article 33.5 in treating this spelling in Rondani (1856) as an incorrect subsequent spelling. A second spelling in Rondani (1856), Oxyrhyncus (q. v.) on page 200, is an unjustified emendation of Ozirhincus Rondani, 1840 .
