ORIGINALLY INCLUDED SPECIES: Chrysogaster tarsata Meigen, 1822 (as “Sp. 6. Tarsatus Mgrl.”); Syrphus metallicus Fabricius, 1777 (as “ Chrysogastrum metallicum Meigenii”); Chrysogaster longicornis Loew, 1843 ; Chrysogaster amethystina Macquart, 1834 .

TYPE SPECIES: Chrysogaster tarsata Meigen, 1822 , by subsequent designation ( Coquillett, 1910: 558) .

CURRENT STATUS: Valid genus [ teste Peck (1988: 137) ].

FAMILY: SYRPHIDAE .

REMARKS: Peck (1988: 137) indicated the type fixation of Lejogaster Rondani, 1857 as by monotypy, but this is incorrect. The footnote by Rondani (1857: 167) to the single listed species in the main body of the text (“ Tarsatus Mgrl.”) clearly indicates that “ Chrysogastrum metallicum Meigenii” [= Syrphus metallicus Fabricius, 1777 ] is a member of the “Tertiae sectioni” [= Lejogaster ] and Rondani further listed two other species in Lejogaster from Italy that he had not seen (“ Longicornis Loëw ” and “ Amethystina Macq.”). Coquillett (1910: 558) is the earliest subsequent designation of a type species for Lejogaster Rondani, 1857 .
